Inspired after rediscovering the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto "No. 5" in E minor, I created this Fantasy for Flute & Piano. The title reflects this pieces imagery rather than the musical form, as it is not an actual fantasy.
It should be noted that Soviet émigré Alexander Warenberg, a composer for film and television, arranged Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 as a concertante work for piano and orchestra. The work contains majority of the source material from Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony with some original scoring by Warenberg, modification of the original score and a change to many of the score’s harmonies "to improve the sound and balance". Technically, it is Warenberg's work that I refer to here; only peripherally Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2.
This work still feels somewhat “rough” within the confines of MuseScore and I consider it a "work in progress" and I welcome your constructive comments and suggestions.
Due to limitations with the default MuseScore playback SoundFont, it is best played using the "GeneralUser GS.sf2" Soundfont by S. Christian Collins Software (http://www.schristiancollins.com/generaluser.php). For your convenience,I created a high definition audio recording of the piece on SoundCloud at: (http://soundcloud.com/magataganm/fantasy-based-on-a-theme-by-s).

Fantastic! Some of the transitions don't feel the best, but still wonderful!
I do agree with you. Measure 60 is awkward and there are other areas. I would welcome your suggestions.
Thanks!
Oh my goodeness this is beautiful... 'strikingly' beautiful might I add!!!
This is absolutely beautiful!!
Thank you!
Unfortunately, I do not have a good technical understanding of the capabilities and difficulties associated with the flute (other than my basic appreciation for its tone quality). I could sure use some objective critique and suggestions from your own perspective as a flautist.
The highest note a flute can play is C3. Great job otherwise!
Natty,
Good catch! Although I think you meant to say C7 (not C3), I corrected the score to remain within this range (C4-C7). Thank you!
Added stylized deceptive cadences on measures 80 & 82.
I redeveloped the transition to the passage on measure 34.
Wonderful, of course, but please, how did you get the mordants and glissando to have that sound?
Thank you for the comment,
With MuseScore it can be quite a pain to add 'playback-enabled' working articulations & ornaments as well as pedal marks. Hopefully this will be adressed in future versions (hint-hint). For now, the onice is on us to implement back door methods. The method I use is the hidden voice method. I created a short tutorial on page 2 of my Baroque Trill Chart page (see: http://musescore.com/mike_magatagan/baroque-trill-styles-chart).
Hope this helps!
