About this score

The song would become famous following the proclamation of the Third Republic (1870).
The lyrics use a pun based on the multiple meanings of the term "vilaine" ( woman resident of a village ), and "vilaine" ( ugly woman ), "I'm not so "vilaine" with my shoes ... ".
Sources say she was set to music in the sixteenth century by Orlando de Lassus (1532-1594).
