Topic of the day: welcome! It's a new year, and with it comes a new version of MuseScore and lots of new users. Join me for an informal tour of MuseScore - the application itself, the websites, the mobile apps - and learn where to get further help.

MuseScore Director of Education Marc Sabatella presents a regular series of free live interactive chat sessions on a variety of topics, via streaming video.  Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and join in the conversation!

Welcome!

Welcome to the group for students in Mastering MuseScore: Complete Online Course!  The purpose of this group is to allow students in the course to share their scores and get feedback from each other.

I have made the group public so you don't have to be an enrolled student to check it out, but of course, you won't have access to all the great videos and other resources that come with the course.  If you want to learn more about the course, please visit https://school.masteringmusescore.com/p/complete

Suggestions for Groups

Hello! So I've just got some suggestions (and bugs that need to be fixed) that maybe you could take into consideration about groups on this site?

1. Blocked users are still able to join your groups
When I block someone, I don't want them in my groups. I mean, technically I could make the group moderated or invite only, but it'll still be a lot more convenient if I didn't have to repeatedly deny a user membership (which has happened several times in the past with trolls/plagiarizers/spammers)

2. Admins can remove the group owner as admin, and group owners can remove themselves as admins
I guess the group owners can technically choose that they don't want to be admins anymore, but accidental removal of the owner by an admin has happened. I'm guessing this is a bug?

3. Admins should be able to kick users without having to find them in the members list
When you have to scroll through 500+ people just to find one user you want to kick, it's kinda annoying :P. And I have had to do this...more than once. Or maybe you should be able to have a search bar in the members section so admins can just type in their username and have them pop up without having to scroll through the entire thing. Same goes for making a user a new admin of the group.

4. Moderated groups - owners get notifications for each join request AND when the user "joins the group" - in other words, when the request is approved
I mean, the join request notification is fine, but it's a bit annoying when I get a notification right after I myself let a user into my group. I think the notification thing is great for open or even invite only groups, though.

5. Maybe groups could have a thing where owners/admins can pin discussions?
Sometimes really interesting discussions get lost after a really short time, especially if the group is really active. It would also be nice if someone really wanted to highlight something in the group but didn't want to make the group description too long or cluttered.

6. Ability to "follow" discussions?
Some discussions are really interesting. But sometimes, we aren't the creators of these discussions, so we don't know when it gets updated (and have to repeatedly check it for more comments). I think following discussions will be a cool and convenient feature.

Thanks!! :D

Jazz standards transcription plan

Below are song titles from a "transcription plan" that was being pursued by this group in 2017-2018. The idea was to take the top 100 jazz standards appearing on the jazzstandards.com list and provide lead sheets. The jazzstandards.com list was  compiled statistically, and is ordered by frequency of recording (see the site for more details).

As of this writing, lead sheets for about 2/3 of the top 100 songs on the Jazzstandards.com list have been submitted to the group. (The full jazzstandards.com list includes 1,000 tunes, in case you were wondering.) At the bottom of this message are the titles that have not been done.

You are welcome to work on the remaining titles, or any other titles considered to be jazz standards (or popular song standards from the classic jazz/swing era--roughly 1910 to 1960). If your song isn't one of the 1,000 songs on the full jazzstandards.com list, it's probably not what most musicians and jazz fans would consider a jazz standard. That doesn't mean it's not a great tune, but in most cases it means the tune is not widely performed. (Perhaps we need a Musescore group dedicated to overlooked and under-appreciated  jazz tunes and traditional popular songs.) We will try to be as inclusive as possible when adding submissions to the group, while still keeping the focus on tunes that you might hear played and sung in jam sessions or on gigs by relatively mainstream jazz performers.

You are also welcome to submit improved versions of any songs that have already been done for the group. Perhaps a song previously submitted is missing lyrics, or missing the introductory verse, or has chord changes that are not widely used by musicians in performance. So far, the group has not been flooded by multiple versions of any given song--if we were to get, say, 10 charts for "I Got Rhythm," we might need to pick the best 2 or 3 for the main listing, but currently that's not an issue.

Note that if you are starting a new chart, you may save yourself some time by working with an existing "Wikifonia Archive" chart and adding your own corrections, improved formatting, and missing sections / lyrics as needed. See the following discussion for more details: https://musescore.com/groups/jazz-standards-leadsheets/discuss/5019538

To add a score to the group's collection, open the score in Musescore.com or find it in your account's list of scores, click the "three dots" action icon at the top right, and then choose type in "Jazz Standards Lead Sheets" to search for and choose this group. You can then leave a comment here with the song title and the URL for the link to let us know you've added a new score. If your chart has notable features or corrections, add a note about it when you post, and consider adding the details to the comments on the score page as well.

Possible to convert a V3 score back to V2?

I installed V3 amd worked out a complete score with 5 instruments.  PC crashed.  Afterwards, V3 not working properly.  Re-installed V2 but now that score is inaccessible.  Any way to convert it back to V2?  (Remember, now I cannot use V3 in this process).

If there is a way onlline to do it, I uploaded the V3 score today (1/17) as 'Slowpoke V3' under my account.

Any help much appreciated.

Android MuseScore app fails to open MuseScore files

The MuseScore app (with the integrated Songbook functionality) fails to open MuseScore files (e.g. on the file system or as e-mail attachments). The MuseScore app is simply not suggested as an app to open a .mscz file with.

Any other users having issues with this?

The good old MuseScore Songbook app (not available anymore for new users) doesn't have any problems with that on my Android devices.

Scrolling playback

The feature I'd like to see is the option to have a side scrolling playback rather than the page view. This would allow the larger font sizes to be more useful.

Right now, I experience a slight delay in page turns during playback. If anything, it would be better if they came slightly early.

New Piano Roll Feature on the musescore.com

Today marks the release of MuseScore Piano Roll. Piano Roll is a popular and convenient method to display piano notation in a way that not only simplifies learning a new piece for novice musicians who lack a teacher, it also beautifully visualizes each score.

(Video captured from https://musescore.com/classicman/scores/33715 )

Give it a try by simply clicking on the Piano Roll icon now available on all solo piano scores. Be sure to tell us what you think in Improving MuseScore.com!

All of these improvements are designed to not only make MuseScore.com the most valuable resource online for sharing and discovering great musical works but for learning them as well.

We hope you’ll be as excited about this new feature as we were to create it for you, and as always we look forward to your feedback.

This is just the first of an exciting series of updates and releases for MuseScore PianoRoll; we're already hard at work on improving the experience!

As iOS developer, how can I make contributions to the mobile apps?

First, I have only just heard about MuseScore and downloaded to my Mac. Awesome! I have searched GitHub and the forums a bit, but I haven't found an answer to my question. I'm sorry if this newbie post is addressed elsewhere.

I have experience as developer of iOS iPhone and iPad apps. I could not find an open source repository for the iOS code or how to help with the development. Please help me understand how to help with the mobile development effort. Thanks.

Suggestion

Hey there! I want to first start off by saying I absolutely love the new MuseScore Drumline Extension! It is amazing! One thing I have noticed, and think should possibly be adjusted sometime in the future, would be a better front ensemble update. I write for indoor drumline and I would love it if the front ensemble sounded a little bit more realistic. I understand that this is mainly a marching percussion update, however I think it would be amazing if things were changed up a bit. I'm sure a lot of other users would be happy too!

Marimba deadstrokes (hard / soft mallets?)
Pedal vibes
Finger cymbals
Suspended cymbals / chokes
Gong / gong roll
Crash-chokes
(Hard / soft mallets for battery?)
Bowed crotales
Bowed cymbal
Bowed vibes
Zil-bell
Anvil
Various tribal drums
Loop wind chimes
More sound effects (wind, rain, thunder, etc.)
More synth settings

Anyway, that's all! Thanks so much! 💙
