New Piano Roll Feature on the musescore.com

Today marks the release of MuseScore Piano Roll. Piano Roll is a popular and convenient method to display piano notation in a way that not only simplifies learning a new piece for novice musicians who lack a teacher, it also beautifully visualizes each score.

(Video captured from https://musescore.com/classicman/scores/33715 )

Give it a try by simply clicking on the Piano Roll icon now available on all solo piano scores. Be sure to tell us what you think in Improving MuseScore.com!

All of these improvements are designed to not only make MuseScore.com the most valuable resource online for sharing and discovering great musical works but for learning them as well.

We hope you’ll be as excited about this new feature as we were to create it for you, and as always we look forward to your feedback.

This is just the first of an exciting series of updates and releases for MuseScore PianoRoll; we're already hard at work on improving the experience!

Comments: Very nice chords!  I don’t see a whole lot of 8/8 pieces, seems like it could be 4/4.  Also the left hand is messed up by the intruding right hand.  Just go ahead and use the ledger lines for the right hand, like in measures 4-6.  But pretty smooth overall.

Comments: Could use some cleaning up of the score.  Also, the strings will kill you if you show them a held arpeggio like in measures 4-5.  Nicely captured the intense feel, good job!

Comments:  Could use some cleaning up.  For example, look at the trumpet part in measure 7.  Also a few times when you had to split the parts because of holding the notes different lengths, you forgot to bring them back together, like the flute in measure 11, fourth beat.  Impressively large scale for your first time ever, though!

Comments:  Delete extra measures!  I’ve never tried an etude, but there are a few places towards the end I think you change motifs too quickly.  Nice break in 5-6 :).

Comments:  Perfectly peaceful piece, Shailey!  A few fingering issues: take measure 13: you start with a sixth, and the melody continues as such, but instead of writing it like you you have the left hand cover the bottom note.  Just make the fifth note in the left hand a half note and continue to use your right hand for the sixths.  Extra especially because the last chord in the left hand is bigger than what most people can reach.

Comments:  Your title hit the nail on the head and I was blown away!  However, the sheet music is a mess.  Like measure four bass clef harp, oboe measure 25, and find a consistent way to notate your whole measure rests.  Also when you copy and paste, keep in mind that the dynamics paste too, so you’ll have to manually delete the repeats, like flute in measure 8.

Comments: Is this ad lib or what?  What’s 15/4? XD  It actually sounds pretty good and feels like more instruments should be coming in.

Comments:  Notating the whole notes above the others (e.g., measure 20, left hand piano) isn’t necessary since you’re using the pedal.  In measure 17, the piano’s cresendo should be between the piano’s staves.  Especially because of the beginning and the end, but also all throughout, you better catch a really long-winded oboist!  This is really quite pretty, though, for being so young and inexperienced.

Request to add Sort by Title to Sheet Music page on MuseScore site

Not sure if this is the right place for this - but when I share a link to a list of my music, I use the "Sheet Music" subpage under My Profile since I can share to those without MuseScore accounts.  However, I want the music displayed in alphabetical order (which is an option on the "My Scores" page).  Already there exist the options to sort by Upload Date, Comment Count, and View Count.

I would love to be able to sort by title and send the link (with the sort filter applied and in the URL), similar to the My Scores page.  For example, I can sort by title there and then the URL appears as - https://musescore.com/my-scores?private=All&combine=&sort_by=title&sort_order=ASC&items_per_page=10

It would be great to have a similar functionality in the Sheet Music subpage.

Thanks!
Bryan

CC#2: Selfmade-videogame medleys

Hey guys!!  So I'm sorry for not being on as often as I'd like, school is supposed to be #1 priority here and all, but I've been wanting to do this for a long time: A videogame medley competition!

This is a longer, more complicated one, as you can tell.  Diverse orchestras are accepted, and solos are as well.  Be sure to label the separate themes and songs in the medley, and they should be around thirty seconds to one and a half minutes long, within lax parameters.  The total medley can be as long as you'd like, with as many pieces as you want.  It does not have to be a real videogame, and as long as it follows all other criteria it will be

Electronic music is discouraged for the sake of creativity, so no music under "electronic" or electronic guitars.  You are encouraged to name your "fake video game", and give a brief description of it.

I will be the primary judge of this competition, and will finish judging on February  23, for the sake of giving ya'll time to work on this.  You will be judged on a scale of 1-10, for effort, uniqueness, simplicity/complexity, description, and separate pieces time limit.

Have fun!  I can't wait to see what you guys have got!  (BTW if you're having trouble, taking some inspiration from themes like Minecraft, legend of Zelda series, or Terraria, all of which have full soundtracks on youtube, will work excellently for getting starting bases to work off of.)

Looking For Submissions.

Hello! My friend and I are currently working on a short film to enter in youth film festivals. We are in need of a soundtrack. If anyone is interested in writing a piece for it please let me know. There's no guarantee we will use any piece, but we are still looking for options! If anyone would like to know more details feel free to ask. Thank you!

Score download option "MusicXML" creates uncompressed xml file w. extension ".mxl"

I realized today that, when I download a file from another user and select Music XML as download option, I don't get the compressed file but the uncompressed XML, but the file still has the extension ".mxl".  The difference is obvious from the file size, too.
I remember that in the past, when using this download format, I got a compressed musicxml file which I could open without problems in MuseScore 2.3.2. The last time I did this was on Jan. 5 this year, so I'm not sure when this was actually changed.
Now, when I download using "MusicXML" option and I try to open the downloaded mxl  file in Musescore 2.3.2, I get an error message:
"Kann Datei  [my file name].mxl nicht lesen: ungeeignetes Format"
(Can't open [my file name].mxl: unsuitable format )
And the details say there was an error when reading Container.xml in line 1, column 1: unexpected end of file.

After I found out that I could see the xml when opening the downloaded file in Internet Explorer or text editor (which wasn't possible in the past), I tried and renamed the downloaded files' extensions from ".mxl" into ".xml", or ".musicxml",  and both could be opened.

I just wonder why this was changed, because the compressed xml is so much smaller. Wouldn't it be possible at least to offer both the compressed and the uncompressed version?
I posted this here because it seems to be a download issue on the website.

- Update: When I download an older score with the MusicXML option, I get the compressed xml. Does it make a difference when the file was stored online?

[New Feature] Personal Messages

Hello everyone!

We’ve got something new for you 🙂.

Prior to today, when someone wanted to write a personal message to another user there was only one option: to send him an email from the Feedback Form. This wasn’t the best option, as some people didn't want to receive email messages, it was difficult to reply, etc.

Today we’re releasing an easier way to communicate with other users: sending personal messages through My Chats.

You’ll see a new section of the User Menu called “My Chats.”

When you send a message to any user, a new chat will be created and you will be notified. My Chats is the place where you can find all your conversations with other users.

As for other notifications you can turn off this type of messages for every channel.

I sincerely hope this is a useful addition to MuseScore.com

As always, we welcome your constructive feedback!

Why have a score for Bodhrán?

There is debate in the Bodhrán community, as to whether the playing should be written down or not. No Bodhrán player I know plays a tune the same way twice, and it is very much playing with the feel of the music.

Having said that, when I first started Bodhrán drumming I found it useful to have a guide as to what to do, so adding Bodhrán to MuseScore may help beginners. Also it would be useful to have the drumming added to a Tin Whistle score, for example, which gives a feel for what the two instruments will sound together.

However if you are dead set against Bodhrán notation, then I understand :-)
