I have just created a group to compile a songbook of songs from Musescore (See group description for more detail, here's the link: http://musescore.com/groups/ultimate_songbook_of_musescore. We need all the people we can get to join, as it 30+ people to really kick start the path to publishing the song book, so it would be great for everybody to join!
Thanks in advance!
I should preamble this with a statement that I hardly ever compose original material. What I like to do is arrange pieces from film for the piano, and I've been doing it for a long time. My music teachers always got rather fed up with the fact that I'd rather play by ear rather than read music. But I eventually learned to read music, kicking and screaming though I did. ;)
Anyhoo, I've been doing several pieces from sci-fi lately, and finally got around to wirting them down. I did "Cantina Band 2" from Star Wars, since it doesn't have any sheet music, and recently I completed the notation for an arrangement of Spaceballs. I uploaded it to this group (at least, I hope I did; I'm still getting used to the format of this forum), and I would like some opinions and suggestions for improvement. I've played through it once, and it works okay for me, but if others have a problem with it I'd be happy to listen.
I am not satisfied with the introduction because it would be hard to play as-is, and I would like to add a key change to the last section so that I don't have so many accidentals cluttering up the work, but I'm not sure how to do that. I have tried, but every effort I've made so far screws up the notation and the local help is no help at all.
The things I know about harmony are like this: I IV and V chords, you can throw in a seventh. other chords are used sparingly. There are different cadences. The cadences end a phrase. The most common is perfect authentic. There are other cadences (No need to list). Then you have a picardy third thing, where you are in a minor key, but end on a major I chord anyway. It sounds cool though. There are suspensions. These make the music more emotional. I get the melody stuff. I need to expand on the melody in this part. Oh, and did I mention the end sounds like barf? It doesn't make sense for the music. You should help with that. I COULD wait and ask my band teacher, but he's crazy (like most band teachers), and impatient. Hope you can help! (I feel like such the noob, butting in and asking questions like this. Excuse my N00B-ness :))
