DaKook Remix Competition #13

13 is the unlucky number, people. This is a prefect time for this.
Welcome to the DaKook Remix Competition. I am DaK- I mean, I am the Grim Reaper, managing the competition in DaKook's... absence, shall I say. You may have been expecting this to be a Halloween-themed competition, since it's October. Well, this may come as a shock to you, but...
It is. There will be a fourth category, for spookiness. It can be spooky, terrifying, eerie, or any kind of scary. If you manage to actually scare me at any point in the song (this does not include using a tenor clef or using 15 ledger lines), that's an instant 100% on spookiness.
Please remember:
- Song length must be between 1 minute and 6 minutes.
- Remixing is a big factor. It is 25% of your score.
- Mashups can get a few bonus points, but clever references to other songs can get more bonus points.
- Please try to make your score readable, and your music playable, to some extent, at least.

Do you dare? Will you enter and submit a spooky remix? Or are you afraid you might lose? Don't be afraid of losing. Instead, be afraid of death (that's me) coming for you if you do not enter.

Entries must be submitted before Halloween. Keep in mind that I may not be able to judge on Halloween. If this is the case, DaKook will judge for me later.

Come to DaKook Village for conversation or quick questions, and don't forget to ask for the Remixer role. https://discord.gg/CBNZYZQ

DaKook Remix Competition Returns (#12) - Results

Hey everyone, thanks so much for competing! Be sure to come back for the next one, and bring your friends, too! Anyway, here's the link to the document that gives the results:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/11bxez7nU1BgpJ0q0ESQLLUR_QfOP9O1cG__Js63X6Qo/edit?usp=sharing

I have a nasty habit of forgetting things like that, so it's always best to provide the link before I'm finished talking.
Everyone did great! Keep up the good work, everyone, and stay on the lookout for the next DaKook Remix Competition! I can't say when it'll start, but I'll do my best to make sure it's soon!

DaKook Remix Competition Returns!

Hello, folks! I would like to introduce to you a new series of DRC! I may change some of the rules, but let's keep it fair:
1. Always use common sense. This applies to anything you do regarding the competition.
2. Remix, arrangement, whatever, anything will be accepted. Keep in mind, though, that the remix factor is still a factor!
3. Maximum length of 5 minutes. This excludes looping; that means the song can be 4:59 and then loop back to the beginning.
4. Be sure to put a link to the original and any other piece you referred to in the description. I don't know every song, and I need to be able to compare the remix with the original.
5. You may only use free soundfonts, but please give credit for any soundfonts you use other than the default soundfont.
6. Plagiarism is unacceptable. Give credit when you need to. Also, don't use someone else's score without permission.

I hope you read all the rules. I try to give you as much freedom as possible. In which case, this first new competition...

Has no theme! Remix whatever, however, anything will be accepted. Be sure to focus on...
REMIXING your score. You will get more points if your score has a lot of original work in it. However, don't stray from the original so much that it isn't a remix!
MAKING IT SOUND GOOD. I won't criticize you for the default sounds. However, do your best to make the audio sound great. Good volume mixing can give you a few extra points, but it may be too much trouble.
Making it PLAYABLE. I can accept super fast violin, or flute, or most any instrument, but I don't want pitch bends on pianos or unplayable guitar sections.
Making it LOOK GOOD. I'm no expert at sheet music, but don't put a note on 23 ledger lines, and don't let the instruments go down off the bottom of the page.
And DO AWESOME STUFF. You can get bonus points for doing particularly amazing things, like adding in part of another song cleverly.

The event will end September 28, 2018. I will judge the submissions as soon as I can after that. You may submit any time from now to then. To submit, do at least one of these:
- Add your score to the group AND include (DRC) or the like in the title.
- Post a link in this discussion with a clear intention to submit it to this competition. I will reply to tell you I have received it.
- Post a link or upload the MuseScore file to DaKook Village with clear intention to submit it to this competition. I will let you know when I receive it.

All scores should end up downloaded on my computer at judging time. If you change your submission, be sure to let me know.

Hibernating

The DaKook Remix Competition will go into hibernation until... I honestly don't know for sure. But school is clearly killing it. I now have college, which keeps me busy most of the time. We will see what happens. Hopefully, this isn't the end of DRC...

DRC#12 - No Entries

I finally remembered to judge on the assigned day, and look, there aren't any entries!
If you need more time, I can judge 2 weeks later.
If nobody likes the theme, I can change it. Let me know if you want the theme changed!

DRC#12

Let's get this started, shall we? I'm finally becoming more free. The goal of this competition will be:

REMIX AN ORIGINALLY 8-BIT SONG.

Find any 8-bit song that's originally 8-bit. It's okay if that song has already-existing remixes, but base your remix off of the original 8-bit song. But remember:

REMIX FACTOR IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SCORE!

You want to remix the song. Simply arranging it for instrumentation will not be good enough. Here are the rules:
1. No dirty words or pictures.
2. No plagiarism.
3. Only free soundfonts allowed.
4. Must be longer than 1 minute and shorter than 6 minutes.
5. You must provide a link to the original song if it is not clear what song is remixed by the title.
6. You must include "DRC#12" in the title.
7. No remixing your own song.
8. Follow the goal of the competition.

Scoring will be the same as usual. If you really want to know, check the discussion of a recent DRC.

As usual, if you have any questions, ask!

The competition ends on November 24. Wait, no, I'll be busy then. The Friday after that, then. December 1.

Well, this is embarrassing.

As I'm sure you've noticed, the results still aren't out. Apparently I need a constant reminder. Remember this: Until I have judged, there is no bugging me too much about it! I hope to remember to do it next weekend or before.

DRC#11 - Late Deadline

Sorry, but I have to extend the deadline. I'm in California right now, and can't judge well from my phone. It's possible, but I won't do it. So the new deadline will be the 27th. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I am very busy. I may not even get it judged by Halloween. If this be the case, then... I guess we'll have to wait until the NEXT week.

I mean, beware, it is almost Halloween. I hope I won't have to take any of you this month... That would be a shame.

DRC#11

Hello, and welcome to the DaKook Remix Competition! This time we have a freestyle competition. You have plenty of time to perfect your remix. The deadline is October 14. I am going on vacation starting October 6 and returning on October 14. So I might not judge it immediately. It will be judged any time during the following week. Now, here are the rules:
1. No dirty words or pictures.
2. The score must be at least 1 minute long, and at most 6 minutes long.
3. No plagiarism.
4. The score must be added to the group and contain "DRC#11" or anything that implies such.
5. Only free soundfonts allowed.
6. You may not remix your own original song.
7. Include a link to the original song in the description, or in the comments below.
8. Any remix/arrangement/transcription will be accepted. Originals, however, will not be accepted.

The scoring is as usual:
20 points for remix factor
15 points for sound
10 points for faithfulness factor
10 points for bonus; 5 bonus points will be awarded for following all the rules.

As I said, submissions will close on October 14. Any questions? Feel free to ask!

DRC#10 - Submissions Closed

Okay, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to collapse this competition. I will announce the winner, but I won't give scoring or notes unless specifically asked for. I will start DRC#11 before this one is even judged. The competition should be posted tomorrow, but I will go ahead and say that it's a freestyle competition again. Any remix/arrangement/transcription will be accepted, but still only free soundfonts. Sorry for the inconvenience/confusion/disappointment.

DRC#10

Sorry for the long wait! But anyway, it's here, the tenth DaKook Remix Competition! Let's start with the rules.
1. No dirty words or pictures.
2. Score must be at least 1 minute, and at most 6 minutes.
3. No plagiarism.
4. The score must be added to the group and contain "DRC#10" or anything that clearly implies such.
5. Only free soundfonts allowed.
6. You may not remix your own original song.
7. Make sure it is very clear what the original song is so I can find it. Please provide a link to the original.
8. If you change the style of the song, say in the description what you were aiming for.
9. The song must use the 8-bit sounds soundfont (provided below). If there are missing instruments, let me know and I will add them! If I can't, though, I will give you permission to use a different soundfont along with the 8-bit sounds soundfont.
10. Do not anger the gorilla.

So those are the rules. Yes, your goal is to make an 8-bit style song. Here is the soundfont: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i55f9qpbn72fs36/8-Bit%20Sounds.sf2?dl=0

You have until Sept. 23 (which is a Saturday, if I'm not mistaken).

Good luck! (See previous competition details for scoring information)

DRC#9

Hello, internet, and I'm not making that same mistake again.
Today (and tomorrow and next week and so on) you will be remixing again.
Your goal this time is to totally wreck the song. Wait, no, I don't mean make it sound bad. I mean change the style, like, a lot. Here are the rules:
1. No dirty words or pictures. Also, no bad puns.
2. Minimum length is one minute, and maximum length is six minutes.
3. No plagiarism.
4. The score must be added to the group and contain "DRC#9" in the title, or anything that clearly implies such.
5. Only free soundfonts allowed.
6. No remixing your own song.
7. Include a link to the original song (usually YouTube, but can be something else) in the description.
8. It should be obvious, but say what style you're going for (e.g. Final Boss, Peaceful, Joyful, Sad, etc. Changing the style simply to Jazz, Waltz, etc. may get less points).
9. Don't break this rule.
I hope you read all that, as breaking the rules can result in a 5 point penalty (in effect), and severe criminal action can result in more penalty.
Scoring will be based on:
Remix Factor: 20/20
How remixed the song is. It must be recognizable, but try to shake things up.
Sound: 15/15
How good it sounds. I don't want a boring song that lasts 5:59.
Faithfulness Factor: 10/10
How well it fits the new theme. This is not accuracy to the original.
Bonus: 10/10
5 bonus points are awarded for following all the rules. More can be given for anything super-cool, like well-done pitch bending, cleverly referencing another song (preferably related), etc.
The line dies on Saturday, September 2. Judging will take up to a week, but hopefully will be done the Sunday right after the line is properly dead.

Any questions? I feel like I'm missing something

DRC#8

Hello, internet, and welcome to Ga- I mean, the DaKook Remix Competition! This time, you actually won't really be remixing! Your mission is to make an arrangement of any song! Here are the rules:
1. No dirty words or pictures.
2. The title must contain "DRC#8" or anything that clearly implies such.
3. Minimum length is one minute, maximum is 6 minutes.
4. The score must be added to the group.
5. The song must be an arrangement of an already-existing song; not your own.
6. All free soundfonts allowed.
7. Little to no remixing allowed. Do not add extra measures, and keep all parts in the right order.
And here is what the scoring will be:
20 points for instrumentation/sound
15 points for faithfulness factor
10 points for well-done chord changes, counter-melodies, etc.
10 points for bonus (5 always awarded for following the rules)

Faithfulness factor = accuracy here.

This competition starts today.
It ends Friday, August 11.
And hopefully will be judged on the weekend after.

The idea was given to me by Jrecula2000. If this works out well, I will start a new competition group; the DaKook Arrangement Competition.
Any questions?

DRC#7

Hello, everyone. Ready for the newest issue of the DaKook Remix Competition? Ready or not, here I come!
Starts today, Tue Jun 27
Ends later, Fri Jul 14.
Rules:
1. No dirty words or pictures.
2. The title must contain "DRC#7" or anything that clearly implies such.
3. Minimum length is one minute, maximum is 6 minutes.
4. The score must be added to the group.
5. The song must be clearly based on two or more songs.
6. All free soundfonts allowed.
7. No remixing your own song.

Scoring will be the same as usual, but maximum is doubled to avoid ties. Even though lots of scores need ties.

Any very popular and commonly remixed song may be judged harshly. Remember that!

Rule #5; you read that, right? Must be based on TWO or more songs. Therefore you must incorporate another song in your remix.

If you have any questions, let me know!

DRC#7 - Announcement

Hello, everyone, I have some terrible news :( Due to upcoming events over here, I will have to do one of two things:
1. Delay the end of the competition by an entire week (the horror!)
2. Have someone else judge for me (I can't even stand the thought!)
So, what do you think should be done?
Should I stop being so dramatic?

DRC#6

Hello everyone, sorry I'm late with this. Anyway, here we go!
Another anything-goes competition. #7 will be a medley competition.
Rules for #6:
1. All free soundfonts allowed; priced soundfonts will be penalized, since it's not entirely fair to use such soundfonts.
2. No dirty words or pictures. Or smells.
3. No plagiarism. If you use someone else's work, give proper credit.
4. Include the context of the remix! This is necessary for faithfulness factor. Also, include a link to the original. These may be included as you introduce your entry in the comments, or in the description.
5. The remix must be longer than one minute but shorter than six minutes.
6. The title must contain DRC#6.

Still judging on Remix Factor (20), Sound (15), Faithfulness Factor (10), and Bonus (10).

GOOD LUCK.

DRC#5

Okay, I'll let you guys go ahead and get started on this; deadline is May 26. Here are the rules:
1. Only free soundfonts allowed.
2. The song must be easily recognizable.
3. No plagiarism.
4. No profanity.
5. The song must be longer than one minute, but shorter than six minutes.
6. The song remixed must be from any game listed in this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OD_3rVczqUVV2kNOT8UdMszheEWZcsWhnfAQPhZudHY/edit?usp=drivesdk
7. The title must contain "DRC#5" or the like, and the song must me posted in the group.

Scoring will be based on:
Remix factor: 20 points
How much of a remix the song is. Remember; more remix factor is awarded for different instrumentation, enhanced chords, changed melody, added parts, etc. Melody changes, though, you must be very careful with. Changing the melody can hurt the song if not done well.
Sound: 15 points
How good the song sound; as a song.
Faithfulness factor: 10 points
How suiting the song is to a certain context. If the context is not mentioned, I will have to try to assume what it is.
Bonus: 10 points
Five bonus points are awarded for following the rules. Medleys get one extra bonus point. Clever references (as long as they are pointed out) can get up to two extra bonus points. Successful slides and other impressive feats can get up to two extra bonus points.

As usual, any questions, email me or comment below.
