A New Type of Competition: FLC Live #1

Oct 8, 2017

Ever want to hear your pieces performed?
Tired of arranging and feeling like nobody will ever perform your piece?

Good news, I am looking for fun arrangers to compete in a new type of Arrangement competition! I have got together with some college undergrads and we have formed a video game Brass Sextet. As you might imagine, our big piece we are working on is the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds piece I am working on but we also would like to sight read and maybe eventually perform other pieces during a recital!

So, here is what it takes. There will be a video game that is selected and your goal is to arrange a brass sextet for it. (Two Trumpets, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium and Tuba)

At the end of the period of the competition, I will score the pieces on originality, creativity, range, difficulty, and just all together how fun the music looks. The winner will be notified and I will bring copies for the sextet, and after a period of us working on it, we will try to record it and give the arranger a copy.

THEME FOR THIS COMPETITION: Legend of Zelda

Rules for the Competition:
1) The music MUST follow the theme.
2) Please be considerate with range of your instruments.
3) Do NOT just transcribe the music, put your own flare into it. Make the music special and fit well for a Brass Quintet.
4) Keep in mind what voices sound well together. AKA Euphonium/Trombone should never be in unison because their timbre clash hard.
5) If you want mutes, signify it in the music.
6) All music must have a composer and arranger on the sheet music.

Tips for writing a Brass Quintet:
1) Use high trumpet/high horn scarce.
2) Give frequent breaks for the players. (I struggle with this one)
3) Wind instruments tend to sound better in flat keys (F, Bb, Eb...ect.)
4) Keep the key signature nice.
5) Try to write in a player friendly way (Please don't use E#'s, B#'s...ect.)
6) As much as a Trumpet player has an ego, not all music is about them. A melody should go around. Don't forget your Tuba.
7) REMEMBER WHO IS PLAYING YOUR HORN PART. I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU SUBMIT SOMETHING WITH LIKE 5 MEASURES OF A TIED WHOLE NOT ON C ABOVE THE STAFF, I WILL KILL YOU.
8) Have fun c:

The competition starts today and will end next Sunday,
October 15th!

Thank you guys and I look forward to seeing what you guys can come up with!
