Support message

Hello all members of Film Scoring Composers. I am Nhat, come from Vietnam, I have a problem, I want to help you: now I am the manager of a group called Saigon Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. We have a music film project in the near future, but we are short of material to perform. And I have a piano piece, so hopefully you can support and arrange it into Solo Violin and Orchestra? I sincerely thank!
I wish you good health!
Best regards!

Competition #3

Hello everyone, I'm so sorry this group has not been active.

For those who are still interested, a small indie film company discovered the music of an obscure composer, and they would like to use one of his short pieces in their film.

The music to orchestrate can be found here:

Only the first five applicants will be considered.

There is no instrumentation requests. The only request is that the music be as emotional as possible.

Best of luck!

Introduce yourself!

For all you who are joining this group, introduce yourself!

I guess maybe I should introduce myself too...

My name is Elliot, I've been composing since 2014, and I have played cello since 2008, and piano since 2006. My composition, "A Journey to Mars," was a finalist in the 2016 National Young Composers Competition, and I enjoy listening to great movie scores. :)

(Feel free to boast about yourself as you desire) ;P

Mucuswarts has decided...

(The following template was copypasted from the first contest's results page.)

Mucuswarts has made their decision. There were two great composers who deserve to be recognized, but only one can be chosen.

That composer is lizzapie, with their composition for piano.

The composer who almost made the cut was Owlman142, with their composition for woodwind trio and reed organ.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Following the success of the TV show, lizzapie gains 272.25 fame points for their work, and for almost being selected for the position, Owlman142 gets 242.25 fame points. Nobody else entered.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I don't have a Youtube account (and won't make one), so I can't post a synced-up version of the audio and video. If someone else could do that, I would greatly appreciate it.

Job Opening #2

OK, first things first...
This group has been inactive for nearly a month now. Both Robin and Elliot Butler have said that they'll probably be too busy to hold/judge any further contests and have said that they can't find any film clips for the competitions anyway. Therefore, I'm taking matters into my own hands. After all, nobody likes a dead group, right?
With that out of the way, on to the job opening!
Mucuswarts Ltd. has recently acquired the rights to some old Georges Melies silent films and is planning to make a quick buck by editing several of them together, dubbing over certain segments, and releasing the result as a single movie. They are looking for a composer to provide the soundtrack for this project. To apply, you must compose a soundtrack to one of the shorter films included in the "movie," "The Lilliputian Minuet."
Of course, this wouldn't be Mucuswarts without extremely strict requirements, and here they are:
The soundtrack must be a minuet in ternary form (minuet-trio-minuet).
The soundtrack must fit the motions of the dancers (i.e. it should be synchronized with the film).
The soundtrack must include at least one keyboard instrument, but no percussion.
No electronic instruments (such as synthesizers, electric guitars, etc.) can be used.
Here is a link to the short:
Good luck!

"New" Group -- Genesis Games Music Team

Hello everyone,

It seems I'm now advertising another new group. (Well, technically, the group I'm about to advertise isn't "new," but nobody besides me has joined it yet at the time of this writing.) The Musescorer Enochulous has made a group called "Genesis Games Music Team" (link here: and is looking for composers and/or other music department members to help him create and share music for some games he is planning on making. (As far as I can tell, right now he's working on one called ZeroBlade Run.) If you're interested in composing for a video game, I recommend you check it out.

Thanks for taking the time to read this,

Is this group dead?

I really liked the premise of this group but no one has posted anything in a while... I'd understand if Elliot didn't have any more time to moderate everything, but I'd really like to see this competition resurrected somehow.

You guys have to listen to this Film score :D (okay you don't "Have to" lol ;P)

This piece is so good, I recommend listening to it. It has so many rich harmonious chords that are just so beautiful, and it has some amazing orchestrations. definitely listen, and maybe even study the orchestration for later use ;) (cause you may need to be using a full soundtrack orchestra for the next assignment! :D) - but maybe not, we'll see ;)

VVC has decided...

The VVC has made their decision. There were so many great composers who deserve to be recognized, but only one can be chosen.

That composer is RookWizard, with his composition for cello quartet and piano.

The composer who almost made the cut was lizzapie, with her composition for flute, oboe and piano.

Everyone else did a great job! If you want a short sentence of comments, I will provide those by request.

Following the success of the TV show, RookWizard gains 453.75 fame points for his work, and for almost being selected for the position, lizzapie gets 87.25 fame points. Everyone else will receive 5 fame points. The standings will be created shortly.

To RookWizard, if we could get an mp3 or wav file for your piece, we'll sync up the audio and video and post the finished product on youtube.

The VVC is in need of a composer to write theme music for their new show, "Meadows."

The opening title is still in development, but the VVC already has some requirements in mind:

- Needs to have a piano

- Must be peaceful and calming

- No percussion

- No more than four accompanying instruments for the piano

- Must be under two minutes in length

The VVC will release the opening title footage sometime in the next week. The deadline is to be announced.

Group Premise

Hello, budding film score composers!

I hope that you will enjoy this experience as well as learn (even a little bit) from it. :)

There are four main production studios who will need your services as composers:

Biznie: A very popular studio who churns out great movies and great music. They put heavy emphasis on very melodic music, and they also have the uncanny knack of being pretty hard on their composers. Sometimes doing music for them can be stressful, as their music producer is constantly changing what he wants.

VVC: Also well known, this studio does mostly TV shows, and their preferences for music is peaceful music that melts into the background. However, due to their TV schedule, sometimes schedules can be a bit hectic.

Dreamquirks: This animated studio focuses on comedic movies and they rarely get into really active music. A lighter, bouncier feel is usually the goal for these guys, though due to budgeting, sometimes they can't hire a decent translator for their Hittite music producer.

Mucuswarts ltd. - This small, independently owned and operated film company makes awful movies, but their music standards are incredibly high. They will make almost all the requirements, and deviations from those requirements will lose you your job.

Now that you've met the companies, let me explain the rest of the group concept.

At the end of each competition, the winner will receive "fame points," based on the difficulty or scenario of the competition. Sometimes, fame points will not be shown until after the movie or scene has been deemed a success or failure. You will not lose any fame points at any time. Fame points are cumulative, and will be shown on a leaderboard.

The scoring rubrics will vary every competition, based on the company's desires, and the requirements of the piece.

There are no prizes, other than getting your music stuck behind the video, and posted on youtube. ;)

I may edit this as I come up with different ideas. :)

I will consider the first competition soon.
