Writing Slow Movements

Jul 2, 2012

Traditionally, the second movements of multi-movement works are slow (Adagio, Andate, Lento) pieces. There are of course countless exceptions, but I have failed to write any acceptable slow pieces, in multi-movement works or not. I always try and make it needlessly complicated, when most slow movements start simply. When I try to write simply, it sounds very contrived. I need to make my pieces immediately individual, which does not suit slow movement writing. How do you, if you do, write slow movements, and have you got any advice?
