TheHerosBane • Aug 13, 2019 Got any good tips for a long time trombone player to switch to euphonium, DCI doesn’t take people who only know trombone :( Comments Severance Practice a ton of scales and chromatic runs. Keep getting them faster and faster, it will help with getting used to valve fingerings and transitions. Devil_Cadet Scales are your best friend. Also I know it sounds weird but learn older shows, most of the modern shows are about the same skill level and it will help you get ready for reading actual music. The hardest part of the switch for me was getting finger dexterity built up which both the scales and show chunks can help with. larissaaww Hi! 2nd year trombone player here, but my friend played trombone and recently switched to euphonium very easily. It's easy to think about it as different valves pressed down as extending the slide. In example 1st position (ie. note Bb) would be open, 2nd position would be just the 2nd valve, 3rd position would be 1st valve, 4th would be 1 + 2, 5th = 2+3, 6th = 1+3, 7= 1+2+3. It's really basic so you already might've known it (sorry!) but it's the exact same notes as the trombone would be, and practically the same breathing. I hope this helped at least a little bit, good luck! L0st_M1ner I play both trombone and euphonium (although i played euph first, so my experience is a little backwards), and I would say that probably some scale exercises could help to get used to valves over a slide. Also just taking some time to get used to the euphonium's different tone, like experimenting to find what gives you the best sound. Not sure if this is helpful too, but when i was learning trombone, I played some of my old music i learned on euphonium, just because I already had an idea of how it would sound, and it was some free practice. Also try finding the best way to get that Euphonium sound out. If you sound like you are playing trombone then you are doing something wrong.
