String Competition #8

So, the theme is going to be the chiché Good vs. Evil. Blah blah, pretty boring, but I think this should get more participants. You can be Peaceful and incorporate both sides into your song.

Post a link to your piece below. All pieces are due the 25th. Happy composing!

The theme is Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter. You may choose Peaceful and incorporate all the sides into your song. Strings only, as usual. Your piece may be a composition or arrangement, but not of Vivaldi's Four Seasons or Frozen.

Let's hope more people participate this time.

A favor to ask from all ye string composers

I may be over stepping my bounds as a member of this group (I sincerely apologize if I am), but I figured "what better place to ask this favor than with a group of string composers?" Please read if you're interested in a bonus competition.:
I've not-so recently taken up a film project, which although isn't much, has had the time and effort of a lot of devoted people put into it. The script is complete along with most of the CONFIRMED casting, and I'm looking towards soundtrack. I've been composing most of it myself, although a majority of it is made up of songs that I like (mostly by my personal favorite bands, which are either unknown classical influenced folk bands, or obscure Icelandic bands). I figured that I would ask others to write the two pieces in question so they don't sound similar to the soundtrack pieces that I'm writing.
Anyway, towards the end, there is a performance of a piece with four Violins, Violas, Cellos, and Double Basses, however there is a very beautiful and emotional violin solo which I CANNOT STRESS THE PLOT-WISE IMPORTANCE OF. The solo should be about a three and a half minutes into the piece, and the entire piece should end very close to when the solo does. Towards the end of the song and the solo, the violin should have a VERY long held high "A sharp". The song should be about five minutes long, and the solo should be about a minute and a half. Don't write the solo at a professional level, since the actress (and the character) is fourteen and is at an intermediate level.
Story wise, the song was written by one of the main characters, who is a high school string enthusiast and a violin player. She entered it into a competition, and almost lost to a very well written piece. If you're interested in writing that one, the only necessary requirements is that it has a LOT of string instruments, that it is about 2 - 3 minutes long, and is really, really, really good. No one will actually end up playing it (it lost out to our protagonists piece) so go crazy with the difficulty level!
Thank you so much for reading this far, I really hope you can find the time to write something for this. Shadow, I don't know if I have the right to do this, so sorry if this is a bit much... but... that means that you are all about -20 obligation level to participate in this. Thank you!

Theme Ideas

This is a place where you can suggest themes for future contests. The winner of a contest can always tap into here if there's ever a lack of inspiration. Remember that none of these are permanent, so feel free to make changes to existing ideas, or come up with your own.

Here are some ideas to get us started:

Autumn / Winter / Spring / Summer
Jungle / Plains / Forest / Arctic Tundra / Desert / Swamp / Mountains / Mushroom
Happy / Sad (chiché)
Fire / Water / Earth / Air / Metal / Rock
Torture Music (eg. every single note on an instrument played at once)

You can suggest single themes, or multiple themes with "sides", like in Music Battle. For example, "Calm" would be a single theme, but "Calm vs. Furious" would be something you could see in Music Battle. When we have multiple themes, we will have "teams". Yes, you may suggest themes already done in another group.

We may sometimes have "twists" to the contests, which are additional limitations along with the theme. This will be like the group Twisty Contests. Since this is an all-string group, some twists will be specifically relating to strings.

Current twist ideas:

Must be all pizzicato
Must have all instruments go to third position or higher
Instruments must be on the wrong clef
Must have tremolos in all instruments at some point
Must have a certain notation, eg. Grace Notes
Must be all [clef] instruments
Must be all the same instruments
Must have [#] instruments
Must be a certain style (eg. ABA form, fugue, canon, etc.)
Only traditional strings (eg. Dulcimer, lute, erhu, koto etc. but NO violin, viola, etc.)

Again, you can suggest modifications, come up with new themes, or both. Please don't suggest genre-based themes like Rock vs. Classic. Those will be way too boring and way too chiché. Also do not suggest themes that are inappropriate for children (you do realize I'm still a minor, right?) or you will be kicked out of the group.

Have a nice day!

String Competition #6

The theme is Warm colors/Cool colors/Greyscale. No peaceful (Rainbows are just too easy to write about.) The twist is that you must make it as hard as possible, but not impossible (eg. quadruple-stops but no quintiple-stops).

Since L7da also won the last competition, if he disagrees with anything then I will compromise.

Voting starts February 25, 12:00 AM EST.

Happy composing!

String Competition #5

Nobody really participated in the last contest, so we're starting a new one.

The theme is WAR. It MUST be a composition!!! I don't want to see any arrangements of Mars or something. Strings only, as usual.

Voting starts Jan 25th, 11:59 pm EST.

Happy composing!

String Competition #4

Since it is December, I would like to do a broad "Christmas" theme.
So a piece in the holiday spirit (snow, santa, Jesus, candy canes, all that etc.), but is an original composition, not an arrangement of a Christmas carol.

can be secular Christmas or religious.

HOWEVER for the twist, incorporate a recognizable fragment(s) or melody of a holiday song/ christmas carol of your choice somewhere in your composition.

I'm not sure exactly when the deadline should be, probably sometime around christmas, so someone can please help me out on this lol. And let me know if you like this challenge.

So here's the rules for this competition:

Let the tournament begin!!!

(Enter before the 29th of November for your piece to be counted. Doesn't matter if its a WIP, just post the link to it in this discussion. Voting begins the 30th and ends sometime afterwards.)
