The opening piece of a cycle for string quartet based on the seven last words of Jesus at the cross. The introïtus has a processional character.
Originally it was a motet for choir and organ, but the notes fit best as a piece for string quartet. The Introïtus formed also the starting point and inspiration for writing this cycle.
The motto reads in translation: "For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"
