Rootham Op.1: "Four Songs" (1894-95)

2 parts14 pages07:34a year ago113 views
Voice, Piano
These four early songs were composed in 1894-95 by Cyril Rootham (1875-1938). At the time Rootham was a young undergraduate reading Classics at St John’s College, Cambridge – before he even started his degree in Music in 1897.

The four songs were chosen by the composer to represent his Opus 1, but originally they were published separately. The first to appear was probably “In the Merry May”, published by Stanley Lucas, Weber, Pitt & Hatzfeld. The three other songs were originally published by Boosey and Co.

In the original Curwen edition 50600 published in 1923, the lyrics attribution was described as "Anonymous". But we now know that the text was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. By today's standards the poem is politically incorrect and very harsh, but at the time corporal punishment was an everyday part of children's life both at home and at school.

Originally published in 1906 as No. 35 of "Weekes & Co.'s Series of Anthems and Part Songs in the Tonic Sol-fa notation", this song has languished in obscurity ever since. This new edition is the first chance for researchers to see and hear the song in staff notation. The words are by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
