'"Gabriel's Message" or "The angel Gabriel from heaven came" (Basque: Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen) is a Basque Christmas folk carol about the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary by the archangel Gabriel that she would become the mother of Jesus Christ the Son of God. It quotes the biblical account of that event (Luke 1: 26-38) and Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1.46-55)....
It was collected by Charles Bordes and then paraphrased into English by Sabine Baring-Gould. It is commonly performed in an arrangement by Edgar Pettman published in his 1892 book Modern Christmas Carols.'
The version here has altered lyrics where the focus is more on Christ than on Mary.
1.The Angel Gabriel from heaven came
to Virgin Mary, and he did proclaim:
“Greetings O highly favoured one! May God bless you!
Don't be afraid or troubled!” Gloria!
2.“A child you will conceive, a son you'll bear.
He will be great and will be named 'Saviour.'
The Lord will give to him the throne of Israel
and he will reign forever.” Gloria!
3.Then maiden Mary meekly bowed her head,
“To me be as it pleases God,” she said,
“My soul will praise and magnify his holy name.
He lifts up all the humble.” Gloria
4.Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born
in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say,
“The Lord is always faithful.” Gloria!
