Ragging Csikós Post (DRC #9)
Uploaded on Aug 19, 2017
I'm not sure this is what DaKook meant by a remix, as this is a ragtime rearrangement of classical music, but here's my entry for DRC #9 (https://musescore.com/groups/dakook-remix-competition/discuss/4384761)!
Back in ragtime's heyday, ragtime rearrangements of the latest classical music pieces were published all the time. There's the "Russian Rag" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86dSnvMuikM), the "Mutilation Rag" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGvb5QjDQWw), "Desecration - Rag Humoresque" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gncRGBLTS9U), "An Operatic Nightmare" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA2SsFlinYk), and more. This rearrangement follows that grand tradition.
Mood-wise, this probably skews towards self-conscious humour. Hermann Necke's "Csikos Post" is somewhat popular (and I've found surprisingly many video games that use that song), and there are probably some people out there who will laugh out loud at this arrangement.
It's actually pretty hard to find sheet music of "Csikos Post" online, and two of the most reliable "original enough" versions I've found for it are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1kxZK_Cdjw and
Perhaps my true inspiration for making this rearrangement, though, was that the start of the opening strain of Tom Brier's "Rising Star" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5FzlKhEjmE) sounds an awful lot like "Csikos Post"'s E-E-F#-G-B-C-E-B melody. So I took it, transposed it to "Csikos Post"'s E minor, and put it in Bars 5-6. The rest of the rearrangement came more easily from there--"Csikos Post" already being in a rather sectional form definitely helped. In the meantime, no wonder I like "Rising Star" so much...
I'm not quite sure how Bars 13-14 (and the similar Bars 17-18) came out sounding so much like Latin music, though.
With that being said, "Csikos Post" is in the public domain, so this arrangement also is.
