Using [Basic] Counterpoint for Strings, and Starting Out

Writing for strings can be a difficult process and there are so many variables whenever you delve into writing for string players. This strategy may help with some problems, but not all problems will be fixed automatically.

Use counterpoint to help add to your melodies. Keep in mind that you need to be acquainted with counterpoint and counterpoint isn't always easy. If you need help with counterpoint, I'll give you some advice.
- Whenever you have only one line [melody], use the following intervals: Unison, major/minor seconds, Major/minor thirds, Perfect fourths/fifths (watch out and don't use fifths more than once), Major/minor sixths, Octaves or perfect eights... Notice there aren't any Dissonant or augmented values [you're allowed to write them If you don't want strict counterpoint]!
- If you have two voices and want to make each voice singable, be sure to use the following intervals: Unison, Major/minor thirds, Perfect fifths [watch out for paralles] (fourths make it harder for your singers), Major/minor sixths, and Octaves/perfect eights... Notice there aren't any Dissonant or augmented values [you're allowed to write them If you don't want strict counterpoint]!

That's all you need to know. Start with writing for solo instead of a duet. After you learned a little more about counterpoint from that; Write one (more) solo for viola. Afterwards, write a duet piece for any 2 string instruments; Follow the advice for singable voices.

NOTE: THIS ISN'T ALL THERE IS TO COUNTERPOINT IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE, GO TO THIS VIDEO SERIES ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/JcqrGLvs95M?list=PLA660D90FB432BD69. TURN UP YOUR VOLUME CAUSE IT'S A BIT SILENT.

Ive been playing music myself for a fair while now but never really done much composing so im giving it a go.
I play mainly clarinet, guitar and a little piano so would love to see if some people who are more familiar with strings and musical composition can give me an idea of how this first piece ive tried to write is like.
So yeh any comments would be great

thanks.

Interesting Quartet Pieces

Hello!
I am an eighth grade viola player. ME and 6 other people are looking for a song to play at GMEA Solo and Ensemble this year.

If you can help me, the song:
-Must have 1st and 2nd violins, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass Parts.
-Cannot be an arrangement of a modern tune.

Are there any other middle school students who can give us a fairly simple song to learn and master, hopefully earning us a high rating.

(We play fairly well, so don't be afraid to give us something challenging. :)

THANK YOU!!!

My string quartet - would appreciate advice

Hi all,

I recently posted my first attempt at a movement for string quartet: http://musescore.com/rpbouman/string-quartet-in-a-minor (videoscore: http://musescore.com/node/480266, youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3g0QgJarSE).

I would really appreciate comments from string instrumentalists, like

1) is it playable?
2) how hard is it?
3) is the notation (dynamics, pizzicato, arco etc) clear?
4) how does it sound? Would extra instruction be required to highlight important lines?

Thanks in advance, and kind regards

Roland

A Chance to get YOUR Music Played and Heard!

Okay, So I have a concert coming up at the end of the year and I need a solo piece, a duet piece and a trio piece ALL for Flute. Not too hard but not too easy. If they are easy, make them SOUND hard. If your piece is selected, when the piece is played, YOUR name will be announced as the composer, along with the piece's title that you feel is appropriate for it. If I choose the piece and all goes over well, you may have to write and compose a piece for a full band setting for a concert for my concert band. So PLEASE participate! It's a great way to get your name out there and have your music played and finally heard!!
Submit your piece with the title you that have selected (must be original).

The Subtitle must be one of two options:
Option 1 - "Piece for Concert"
Option 2 - "Piece for Contest"
If your piece doesn't have one of the two selected subtitle, it will not be considered.

You must also have the composers name (YOU) and the instrument name (flute for the entrance piece). It may be for solo flute, duet, trio or even a flute quartet.
Due Date for the pieces is: Friday, March 30, 2012! :)
Any questions, feel free to ask! :) Good Luck!
AND make sure you have fun and try your best!! :))

Auditions for The Musescore Virtual Orchestras

I want to start on a huge project, that requires the help of everyone! Much like Eric Witacres's Virtual Choir, I will be compiling recordings of a large number of people, into one track.
Auditions have started and will run through the 13th of June. The piece we will be performing is most likely going to be one of my original compositions and will be a huge undertaking.
As of right now, we are short of String players and Vocalists. If you are interested or would like to audition, the link is below and you can email me, at the email below.

Violin concerto:Secondmovement almost finished slow&fastsections

My entry in the post-romantic postBarber violin concerto stakes!I love the 2nd movement.
Still working on orchestrating the first movement which at 382 measures seems too short. It has 3 main themes in exposition but they are not developed are they?Old-fashioned sonata form doesn't have to be followed but I did want to have some guide for structuring the material. the recap comes with 1st subject repeated in F major instead of opening Gmajor. There was other material I wanted to repeat :maybe I will.It flows very well (the way I want it to)so maybe I should let it alone -it ain't a big post- romantic concerto- it's a small one .I like it very much .I have a theme for the finale but haven't felt like composing anything new! i would like some sophisticated listeners for it but I feel it flows so well maybe anyone would like it.
