Does anyone want to do a Christmas competition? :D

If any of you do, here is what you will be doing!

Write an 'Arrangement' or an 'Original' Christmas song using one of these instrumentations!
INSTRUMENTATION 1:
- French Horn
- 1 of any untuned percussion
- 1 of any tuned percussion OR Piano
- Violins 1&2
- Violas
- Cellos
- Contrabasses

INSTRUMENTATION 2:
- Flute
- Oboe
- 1 of any tuned percussion OR Piano
- Violins 1&2
- Violas
- Cellos
- Contrabasses

INSTRUMENTATION 3:
- Any type of 1 Saxophone
- 1 of any untuned percussion
- 1 of any tuned percussion OR Piano
- Violins 1&2
- Violas
- Cellos
- Contrabasses

***NOTE: you do not need to use ALL the instruments given. Like you could do just Horn and Strings for example. but you cannot mix different Instrumentation Groups***

No time limits, the only limits are your imagination and the instrumentation (and that it has to be Christmas music)! :D

Really need advice!

Okay, so there's an open evening for an exhibition coming up and I said that I would play piano during the event as sort of background music. I thought I had plenty of music, but after looking through my many folders I realised I didn't have as much as I thought I did. I want to find some easy ish pieces in a classical/elegant style, possibly similar to the music of einaudi and composers alike. If you have found any really good piano solos on musescore then please post the links below! They can be original compositions also if they are in that sort of style. If you can imagine someone playing it in the background them it will be great! Thank you! And I really really hope there are some! They don't have to be yours, just if you find some then please tell me.

Odd Time Signature Advice

I don't know about you, but I used to have trouble with odd time signatures. Here's how I remedied that.

Adam Neely's bass lessons on youtube are amazing sources of knowledge about time signatures and theory in general, and that's where I learned how to experiment with odd signatures. However, just knowledge isn't exactly enough. You have to listen to some and feel the strange signature. A great band to listen to is TOOL (the one with Maynard James Keenan, etc. etc.), as MUCH of their music is in obscure time signatures. Once you get used to those songs, listen to math rock (a good band is Totorro, spelled exactly like the adorable fluff ball of the character from the movie/anime). Try playing a song on your instrument in odd time signatures, and build a new mental metronome to count that timing.

When you're writing in odd time signatures, avoid what Adam Neely calls the "clave" of the time signature. For instance, in 5/4, the "clave" is two dotted quarter notes, then two quarter notes. This is a common 5/4 rhythm, but it's a bit bland when used over and over again (it's used in the mission impossible theme song). There are thousands of rhythmic combination with even just eight notes, so you can pretty much subdivide it however you want to.

musescore college

wouldnt it be nice if musescore had a group devoted to educating members on music theory, arranging, orchestration...
yeah, I know that some high school classes use musescore for teaching music but that isnt exactly what I mean here. I mean a place totally here at musescore where members could make intelligent critical educated helpful comments about music.
there are certainly members who are very well educated in music who could help members out with their music, exchange helpful comments, a place where people could actually learn about music rather than the hit or miss experimentation alot of us do. I know I am just talking into the wind, but still, sigh.....oh well.....

DYDD, The Opera

The following is a synopsis of an opera about the DYDD, Downy Yellow Dingle Dork for those of you who still do not know. Any suggestions or comments are welcome (other than "don't do it") and anyone who would be willing to collaborate or otherwise help in any degree on this project is most welcome. Although it may have taken Rossini only 13 days (supposedly, I also heard 40 days) to write the "Barber of Seville," I am no Rossini of course and this project, if it ever gets done (no, don't start off negatively! be positive) will likely take more like 13 months to put together (being realistic, no?) Anyway, I welcome any comments as always. Thank you, music lovers.

Synopsis of the dydd opera

An opera in Three acts
Patterned after the magic flute
Themes are right to life, preservation, tolerance, freedom

Overture- a medley of the opera tunes
First act
We see the members of the secret audobon discussing the dydd. They sing of the reasons why the dydd must be made extinct and of their plans for its capture and extermination. This should be done very comically.
We then meet some isolated folks who want to save the dydd. These folks each have their own melody and they meet and sing a medley of their individual tunes.
They decide to form the knughts of dingle dork. This introduces the theme of the knughts and their motto.
We get a fleeting glimpse of the shadow of the dydd which introduces its theme briefly. Then we hear its cawing mocking laugh as it flees the pursuing secret audobon
Act one ends with the knughts singing on one side and the secret audobon singing on the pther side their competing themes and aims.
The act ends with both groups expressing frustration at not being able to capture it and we agin hear the dydd’s cawing laugh as the curtain closes.

Second act
This act begins with the chase music as the secret audobon sets its traps and then falls into their own traps.
We then get introduced to the dydd and it sings its tune.it sings about its life and how important and beautiful it is although it Is lonely since there are no other dydds. It can also sing its signature theme.
The knughts then chase after the dydd and they do many comical face plants and capture a dydd doll.
The dydd has many adventures in its travels to other lands. Th act ends with its discovery of pacificus and its capture by the Inhabitants.

Act 3
The third act is the resolution of everything.
As the act opens, we learn about pacificus and the dydd meets a female dydd and sings its love song. It realizes its importance in the world through discovering its history in the land of pacificus.
Meanwhile the secret audobon and the knughts have a showdown and manage to capture each other in their traps.
The act ends with everyone in traps or tied up and the dydd comes center stage and proudly sings its victory song. The female dydd cones out to join it and they sing a duet. Then all the baby dydds join them onstage and everyone sings the grand fanale.
