Final Round

Apologies for the delay. For the final round of the competition, you will be arranging Symphonic Dances from West Side Story for brass band. Due to its length, you will only have to arrange it up until measure 278 (as shown in the pdf file included in Discord).

You will have until October 14th to complete this round. Good luck!

Round #1 Results

J.S. Bach - Passacaglia from passacaglia and fugue in C minor, for string orchestra [Orch 17/18]
StandardUser101

Fluidity: 53/60
Instrumentation and Playability: 25/30
Engraving: 7/10

Total: 85/100

Comments: Fairly standard. The Bass and Cello in the beginning could be seperated more, and the Bass's low C extension could be employed as to not make the low Cs suddenly a unison between Cello and Bass. I liked the call and response section in 89 which had a pedal when viola/cello stopped to pass more smoothly to the other part. Engraving -1 as the Cb. was left there at short name instead of being deleted.

Passacaglia in C Minor, BWV 582, arr. for string quintet (Orch #1)
Dun Ought

Fluidity: 54/60
Instrumentation and Playability: 24/30
Engraving: 8/10

Total: 86/100

Comments: I liked the use of tenor ranges of cello and bass and leaving out viola at the section of 26, for example. This creates a new tone colour which is more husky-esque. Dovetailing (which has one or two notes overlapping) could be employed instead of the call and response you have starting from 89 with cello and viola which may create problems as the players may not catch it. The pizzicato parts are really well done besides the problem pointed out just now. However, one large flaw was that even though your score was for string quintet, you had this section from 161 till the end which cannot be played by one violinist (2nd violin part), thus leading to a low playability mark. Engraving -1 for the barline not going down to the bass stave.

[Unfinished] Passacaglia in C Minor for Orchestra (Orch 1) (HQ Audio)
vesteel
Fluidity: 52/60
Instrumentation and Playability: 24/30
Engraving 7/10

Total: 83/100

Comments: First, kudos on using full Orchestra. The beginning was standard string quartet, with an orchestral crescendo into the tutti section. The lower engraving marks come from the lack of a2, tutti or divisi signs, for example the oboe part. I, however enjoyed how you started with "wind timpani" for trumpets, giving it more of a baroque feel. The trumpet strayed away from timpani near the end for the solo and I think really pushes the piece to the climax.

Given that only 3 participants submitted, we will have a single elimination and only two rounds. The scores were really close but unfortunately, vesteel will be leaving us this round. Thank you for participating!

Submissions

I apologize for being late with this announcement. Both of us have been a bit busy lately. Considering that we only have a few complete submissions, we'd like everyone to submit their entries even if it isn't complete. We will take incompletes, but it will affect your final score. Please submit by the September 13th.

Round #1 Final Extension

So far, we only have 3 entries so we decided to give one last extension for this round. You will all have until September 3rd to complete your entries. Those that have already submitted will be permitted to edit their work if they wish.

Again, this is the final extension, so make sure you finish before September 3rd! Good luck!

Round #1 Extension

Considering the length of the piece, we want to make sure you all have enough time to finish. About how far are each of you into the orchestration process? A measure number would be preferred.
