Contest #7

Okay, here it is. You must write a piece concerning one particular animal. It doesn't have to
be your favorite animal just any. Complete the piece and submit by May 15th.
Voting: Voting will begin on May 17th. The voting works in rounds. Members will select two pieces from the list to vote for. This may include our own. The piece with the lowest amount of votes is eliminated. I will beak any ties in the voting. The voting process is then repeated repeated until one piece remains. Voting deadline for Round 1 is May 24th.
Any questions?

Contest #6 (News, entries, etc.)

And the theme of contest #6 is....

drum roll....

Mystery Music Theme! The music that you could imagine hearing in a mystery movie (or show or whatever). I tried to pick a theme that people would like. I'm hoping this theme will create a lot of drama in our enties.

The voting is complicated. Like flyingninja, I'm not going to explain it until the submission deadline is over. Yet me just say that there are a lot of things you can do to earn "points." Whoever has the most points at the end is the winner (obviously). But basically, three selected judges (I call them my "secret agents") here on MuseScore will listen to all of the songs and give points to every song, depending upon how well it fits the theme. No, they aren't biased.

This is how you can earn points.

A perfect score is 50 points, but I doubt anyone will get a perfect score.

1-5 points: The judge likes how the song sounds. (You can earn a total of 15 points, as there are 3 judges).
5 points: The judge thinks it matches the contest theme. (you can get 15 points total.)
5 points: You entered your song by the "early submission deadline." (you can get 5 points total.)
1-5 points: How suspenseful the judges think it is. (you can get 15 points total).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before anyone says, "Even if the judges aren't biased, how suspenseful they felt it was is a matter of opinion!" I would like to inform you that that statement is only partially true. Although some judges many feel more on edge when listening to an orchestral than, lets say, a piano solo, how suspenseful a song gets is up to the composer. Besides, you guys are all good composers; I'm sure you can do it if you try!

Submission Deadline: March 7th. This gives you a little over a month to write something up.

Early-Submission Deadline: February 21st. If you submit your song by the "Early Submission" date, you earn extra points.

Voting Deadline: (you won't need to worry about this yet)

Again, I hope a lot of people like this, and I hope a lot of people participate. I want this to be as fun as the last contest!

P.S. Any questions? Post your concerns here.

The Hall of Fame

So I thought of this new thing. This discussion will keep track of how many times different users have competed/won these theme-based contests. I decided to keep track of it by making it like a medal system. You can earn medals by winning competitions. This isn't to show who's the best at composing, mind you; it's just showing who the active members of this group are.

Here's how you get medals:

Gold: Place first in a competition.

Silver: Win a "Random Drawing."

Bronze: Place anything but first in a competition.

With that in mind, here is the Hall of Fame:

Serenade17: 3 Gold, 0 Silver, 1 Bronze
Mega: 2 Gold, 0 Silver, 2 Bronze
FlyingNinja77: 0 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze
TheNewKid: 0 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze
AshBoy: 0 Gold, 0 Silver, 2 Bronze
SpuddBoy2: 0 Gold, 0 Silver, 2 Bronze
chronondecay: 0 Gold, 0 Silver, 1 Bronze
hms_victory: 0 Gold, 0 Silver, 2 Bronze
Timpanibeast: 1 Gold, 0 Silver, 0 Bronze

This page has been updated as of contest #5 (the Underwater one). If you guys have any suggestions about this, please let me know. And if you think this idea is stupid and I should delete it, please let me know. Either way, I'd like imput!

Contest #5 -- What was your first...

"What was your first trip to the underwater world like (real or imaginary)?" What did you see? Did you take scuba gear, or did you travel in a submarine? Did you meet any mermaids? Etc.

I hope I've picked a fun theme. I'd like to see what you guys can come up with.

Voting: Here's how voting is going to work. None of the voters are allowed to read the description for the contestants' submissions until after they have listened to the piece and written down what they thought the "underwater world" sounded like. I'll go around after the voting date is over and check out who painted the best musical picture.

Have fun, and happy trails.

Updates to this Group

Hi, everyone,

I just updated the group name. It now contains a hyphen like it should, i.e. "Theme-Based". I also tweaked a little of the wording for our group description (Spuddboy, don't shoot me, please!) so that it now uses "us" instead of "me", with the message being from the admins and not just the manager.

Yes, Master Spuddboy, we all know that it was you who came up with the original wording. I am not taking credit for any of it, as I hope you understand by reading this message. If you don't like it, you/I/whoever can change it back.

Happy trails, Flyingninja77

I know it's a long way away (and I have yet to talk to the other admins), but we should make the prize for winning Contest #10 be promotion to rank of admin (if you're not already one). Who likes the idea? Who doesn't like the idea? Should it be a more distant contest?

Let me know!

Membership Additions?

Hey guys,
I feel bad cuz' I haven't had enough time to manage the group as much as I'd like to.. thanks for all the time you guys have put in to make this group run like I envisioned it would :) I really appreciate it :)
With that said, I feel like this group has run long enough for us to maybe consider opening the doors for a few more members to be in the group.. what do you think? There's a whole lotta talented composers out there that would like a chance at something like this, and I think this a healthy and positive enough group where we can take a few more members... any ideas on who?
Suggestions for additional members will be discussed until the first of January, and on that day we will choose people to partake in the competition!! For now, this discussion will serve as the board for member suggestions.

I seriously think that...

Everyone who posted a song should be encouraged to listen to the others' entries (and I'm not saying this just for my own benefit). We usually have only a handful of votes, and I think that if everyone participating in this contest (#5) would check out others' songs, then we'd all be helping each other out.

Everything you need to know about Contest # 3!!!!!!!

WHAT THE THEME IS: Defeating the Enemy

This is purposely a non-specific category, so that you could do many different genres: a knight slaying the dragon, a superhero defeating the alien, etc.

That gives you exactly one month. Enough time to write a good score! WIPs are accepted too.

WHEN THE VOTING IS: October 20-22

No explanation needed.

WHERE: Post any entries into this group, under this discussion.

To make voting interesting, everyone must vote for each entry. They must give each song a rating between 1 and 5, with 1 being the lowest (really bad) and 5 being the greatest (seriously awesome). You can contact this user to enter your votes: http://musescore.com/user/17795

Good luck, and I hope a lot of people participate!

Votes and News: Contest #2 "The American West'

Yes, it's up! This is the official location for info concerning the second theme-based contest! Here's all you need to know to get started:

WHO? Any members in this group (even if you've already won. If someone wins for a second time, he/she may opt to do another "random drawing" for the next theme)
WHAT? The American West
WHEN? Before September 14th this year. This gives you a lot of time to get started.
WHERE? Post everything about *this* particular contest on this discussion, please.
WHY? To have fun.
HOW? You may use any instruments, time signatures, key signatures, styles, etc. at your disposal to try to represent the American West.
ANYTHING ELSE? If we decide the length of the contest stops the flow of this group, there will be another "random draw" hosted by Serenade17 to determine the next theme.

For the next challenge (and no, I'm not saying that I've won this one)

Fro the next challenge, we should SERIOUSLY (and I can't stress this enough) make the competition time frame a month at most. I say this because of this reason: #2 (The American West) was such a long competition that it seems everyone has lost their interest in it (perhaps that it just me, though). It almost seems like this is an inactive group. To make this more fun, we should make the competions shorter. Does anyone else agree?

And it's on!

My song for the first challenge (albeit, incomplete) is posted. Constructive criticism would be welcome. And I'd like to hear your guys' songs, too. So, HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT! (Not really.)

EDIT--Here's a list of the currently submitted songs:

Any that I missed? Please let me know so I can update this page.

Pick a Number from 1-500

Here's where we'll decide who gets to take the first pick at the topic. Starting now and ending a week from now (June 12, 2012) participants should post what they think the number I've chosen is. On June 12, 2012 I will announce what the number is. No fractions, decimals, or complex integers, or irrational numbers or imaginary numbers. :P
The number choosing will start in 3.

(and no, those were not the numbers :P)
