JVKE has some of the most compelling piano music today, and he’s proven that fact again with his latest single, “butterflies.” The song, which Billboard calls a “piano-pounding pop jam,” features K-pop stars Kim Chaewon of LE SSERAFIM and Taehyun of TOMORROW X TOGETHER. The trio has just released an animated music video for the track, featuring a visually appealing retro gaming style that we all love. On top of that, we’ve got the sheet music for you to follow along.
JVKE utilizes the higher register of the piano for a brighter attack, which is perfect for its highly syncopated rhythm. The harmony begins on an F# minor 9th chord, shifting to an F# diminished 9th with an A natural in the bass to give the progression a greater sense of movement.
He resolves it to a G# minor 7, which also resolves the rhythmic tension with quarter notes. Rounding out the four-chord loop is a G# diminished 7th chord that adds tension to bring us back to the F# minor 9th. The bridge changes things up by moving from F# diminished to E to A major 7, and ultimately to B major on the second ending.
Of course, the driving piano part is there to create a groove for JVKE, Taehyun, and Chaewon to sing over.
“I have so much respect for Taehyun and Kim Chaewon’s artistry. It has been like a dream for them to love a song that I wrote enough to sing on it with me,” JVKE said in a statement.
Get your summertime groove on and learn to play “butterflies” on piano.
