The Met Gala returned this year to show off the biggest fashion trends while raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The evening included performances that included a Sabrina Carpenter and Stevie Nicks teaming up for a duet of Fleetwood Mac‘s 1975 hit “Landslide.”
The moment came after Carpenter’s own three-song set of “House Tour,” “Espresso,” and “Please, Please, Please.” Nicks had her own four-song performance after, which kicked off with their duet and included “Gypsy,” “Edge of Seventeen,” and “Don’t Stop.”
It took place in the Temple of Dendur, an ancient religious structure gifted to the United States by Egypt, now housed in the museum’s Sackler Wing. Such a setting brought even more gravitas to the situation.
Nicks began the song accompanied by the iconic fingerstyle guitar accompaniment, which arpeggiates the chords over a steady bass line. Carpenter then walked onto the stage to sing the second verse and harmonize on the chorus. The duo held hands to finish the song.

Nicks wrote “Landslide” in 1973 during an uncertain time in her life. She was staying in Aspen while her partner, Lindsey Buckingham, was on tour with Don Everly. Their album “Buckingham Nicks” had just been released, but to little recognition.
“I was perfectly delighted to work and support us so that Lindsey could produce and work and fix our songs and make our music,” she told Performing Songwriter in 2003. “But I had gotten to a point where it was like, ‘I’m not happy. I am tired. But I don’t know if we can do any better than this. If nobody likes this, then what are we going to do?’ So during that two months I made a decision to continue. “Landslide” was the decision.”
The song’s ponderous lyrics continue to resonate with listeners over five decades since its release, and the Met Gala performance proved it with its intergenerational framing.
At its core, the song is about vulnerability and resilience, and each singer represented those qualities. Carpenter, who has spent the past year at the top of the pop landscape, approached the song with delicacy to complement Nicks’ deeper alto range. The contrast gave the performance a deeper emotional dimension, underscoring how the song continues to evolve with every voice that takes it on.
Carpenter has been leaning into moments like these. Her headlining set at Coachella included a guest appearance by Madonna. The pair sang “Vogue,” “Like a Prayer,” and their new single, “Bring Your Love,” which will appear on Madonna’s new album “Confessions II” on July 3rd, Rolling Stone reports.
The Met Gala has created memorable collaborations through the years. As Vogue points out, it has “seen its fair share of major stars pair up for the evening’s big performance, from Stevie Wonder and Usher in 2025 to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in 2024 and Kacey Musgraves and Lenny Kravitz in 2021.” 2026 set the bar high, so we can only imagine what’s in store for next year.
