With Ella Langley consistently in the Billboard Hot 100, it’s no surprise that her duet with Morgan Wallen, “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” has been playing everywhere. This year has been a hit for Langley with her hit songs “Dandelion” and “Choosin’ Texas,” and she continues to top the charts. This duet marks the first time since 1983 that a duet by two country stars has been in the top 10 of the Hot 100, with the song in 1983 being “Islands In the Stream” by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. This heartbreaking song is a fantastic example of what can happen when two stars collaborate for something bigger.
“I Can’t Love You Anymore” debuted at #7 on the Hot 100 and is now Langley’s third top 10 hit, as well as Wallen’s (a bit more seasoned than Langley) 19th. Additionally, Langley was in the top 3 spots for Hot Country Songs when the song debuted at #3. You can listen to the song for yourself here:
The History Behind “I Can’t Love You Anymore”
The chords behind “I Can’t Love You Anymore” are reminiscent of other minor-key ballads. The minor key means that when the progression uses a major chord, it tries to pull you back to the gloomier sound. The laid-back tempo also creates a tension between the singer and the band. Lyrics such as, “I can’t love you anymore/Can’t keep chasing you ’round, ’round the back of my mind” feel like they should push a bit more, but the drums hold it back, adding to the message: I can’t love you anymore, but I desperately want to. It’s the combined vocals of Langley and Wallen that keep this song in rotation, whose voices sound like they were made for each other.
The rollout for “I Can’t Love You Anymore” was highly anticipated since Langley and Wallen performed the duet for the first time in concert. Langley also teased the upcoming song in the music video for her hit song, “Choosin’ Texas.” As per Rolling Stone: “…the Dandelion singer teased the new duet in the star-powered music video for her sensational single ‘Choosin’ Texas.’ Following her character’s breakup with a cowboy (played by Luke Grimes), Langley hitches a ride back to Tennessee with a sage country singer who’s already seen it all (Miranda Lambert). As Langley hops into the dusty Chevy Gladiator, the license plate reveals the acronym for the duet’s single, ‘ICLYA.'”
