Tame Impala’s “Loser” has been trending after its appearance in the recently released movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where it is the focus of a scene. “Loser” was originally released in 2025 and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at no. 91, but only stayed there for a week before falling off the charts. This isn’t the first Tame Impala track to find a second life. “Dracula,” which peaked at no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 after 44 weeks on the chart, also found an audience after a collaboration with JENNIE. So with so many of us loving what he’s putting out, why aren’t these songs gaining recognition the week of their debut?
Tame Impala, aka Kevin Parker, originally started his discography leaning more into the genre of psych rock. However, as time has passed, he has found his sound more in dance music. “Loser” was the second single from Parker’s fifth studio album, Deadbeat, released September 3rd, 2025. As said by Consequence Sound:
“‘Loser’ is a lot less concerned with tripping out and much more focused on the id; the raw impulses and self-destructive tendencies that Parker usually wraps in layers of dreamy production are presented here with minimal cushioning, save for the touch of atmosphere on his vocals and the kaleidoscopic synths that warm up around the bridge.”
The track leans into a funky guitar line, supported by synths and Parker’s floating vocals, accompanied by dripping harmonization. Parker’s signature dreamy production style is on full display. In the earlier Consequence article, they named “Loser” their song of the week for these reasons. However, “Loser” hasn’t seemed to catch the ear of all of its critics. ACRN said:
“On one hand, it’s great to hear that Tame Impala maintains its unique, irreplicable sound ten years later. On the other hand, how has a long-running project most known for its innovative and individual music not developed in over a decade?”
This seems to be the crux of the issue. Parker has so many tracks that span a wide variety of “vibes.” Yet, they all tend to sound the same. It allows these songs to really shine when put in the correct context, like a scene in a popular movie. But when you listen to the full album, a lot of these songs tend to run together, creating a sort of monotonous feeling. What I know for certain is that there will always be a place for Parker’s work, whether that’s on TikTok or in movie theaters.
Parker’s track “Dracula,” featuring JENNIE, has continued to rise through the charts, and it’s interesting to look back on the Tame Impala discography and what it has to offer. After almost 2 decades of making music, Parker seems to be gaining the mainstream fame he deserves.
