The soundtrack to “KPop Demon Hunters” has continued to dominate the Billboard charts. Leading the charge has been “Golden” by the film’s animated band of heroines, HUNTR/X, but their adversaries, the Saja Boys, have catchy songs of their own.
“Your Idol” is the penultimate song in the movie that the Saja Boys perform to summon Gwi-Ma, the all-powerful ruler of the Demon Realm. The group uses the music to put their audience into a trance. Although the song is upbeat, it’s a decidedly dark moment. The lyrics reflect themes of celebrity worship and spiritual deception as the Saja Boys tempt the masses.
“It’s about the obsession of fans [because the Saja Boys] want them to be obsessed [to control them],” songwriter EJAE explains. “That sounds like what an Idol is. I was raised Christian and remembered it’s a sin to idolize something. So, it was like a twist of ‘I’ll be your Idol.’ It was kinda creepy.”
With such dark themes, the song has a broader scope than your typical K-pop hit. That’s why Little V decided to reimagine the song into a metal version.
Little V performs all of the instruments, from the heavy drums to the drop-tuned guitars. The thick texture really adds a new dimension to the song’s lyrics. He also created an awesome video with dark imagery to put the performance over the top.
It’s proof once again that good music will always be able to transcend styles.
