RAYE’s hit song, “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” has been a viral hit since its debut performance in 2025. Entering at number four on the UK charts, by January 2026 it was number one. With a lot of recent pop music staying strictly in the genre, “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” has broken the mold and pays homage to 1960’s girl groups and big band soul. It has also found virality on TikTok with over 5 billion views and around 1 million videos. With its long-lived popularity and catchy chorus, is RAYE’s hit song the wedding anthem of 2026?
RAYE is a British singer-songwriter from the UK known for her fusion of R&B, jazz, pop, and other related genres of music. Before starting her own solo career, she worked as a songwriter for other artists such as Beyoncé, Charli XCX, and Little Mix. After a dispute with Polydor, she independently released her debut album in 2023, My 21st Century Blues, which contained her first number one song on the UK charts, “Escapism.” In a little over 3 years she has won 6 Brit awards, with her performing “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” at the 2026 awards.
The Rise To Fame Of “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”
Before “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” was officially released, RAYE performed the song to open her Glastonbury Festival set the summer of June 2025. A video of the song garnered almost 2 million views, to which RAYE responded by teasing the official recording on TikTok in short clips. Since then, the audio of those clips have spawned covers and dances to the song. Additionally, appearances on Graham Norton, Jimmy Fallon, and the Today Show have shifted its trajectory from a “TikTok song,” to mainstream popularity.
“WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” is about desperation and wanting to find love. RAYE lays this out throughout the song, saying in an interview with British Vogue, “I’ve been single for so long. My last devastating break-up was four, five years ago. I was like, ‘I’m gonna marry him.’ We was together for two years and it ended up not working out. I have never experienced a more crippling emotion. It took me three, four years to get over him. Like, I can’t allow myself to fall in love again until it’s safe.” Clearly, the sentiment of the song has resonated with audiences worldwide.
The Big Band Sound of “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”
“WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” instantly stands out for its use of big band instruments and syncopated beats. Musically, its primary use of the B flat minor pentatonic scale, featuring a raised sixth throughout that adds variety to the minor key, differentiates the song from other mainstream pop hits. In an interview with the song’s co-producer, Mike Sabath, he claims, “[RAYE] was super inspired by The Supremes, visually and textually…” and this is evident in the vocal layering used throughout to imply a motown style girl group. In the same interview he says of the vocal production: “This record was super untraditional in the way that we did the lead vocal. In the verses, there’s no lead vocal; it’s just doubles on the sides. And that’s how we did [most of] the record. She kept trying to cut a lead and didn’t like it, so I had to figure out what the “lead” meant in this context and create what it would feel like using four to eight voices.”
