2026 has been a great year for country-pop songs and Stella Lefty’s “Boston” is one of the many songs that has climbed the charts and currently sits at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Stella Lefty (full name Stella Lefkofsky) has always been drawn to country music. In an interview with Rolling Stone she says, “I love country music more than anything. It’s just what I love with my fucking heart and soul. But I’m not Southern. I always worried, ‘Do I have to be?’” There has been some discourse of what constitutes a country song, but I think once you hear the twang of the guitar, I-ii-IV chord progression, and Lefty’s vocal style, you’ll have no doubt what genre “Boston” is.
Interestingly enough, “Boston” isn’t necessarily about Boston, Massachusetts. Lefty wrote it about her boyfriend, Vincent Mason, who is also a country artist and from the suburbs of Atlanta. Lefty wasn’t even near Boston when she began writing the song. From Rolling Stone: “The seeds of ‘Boston’ came together a few minutes before Lefty, in Nashville for a writing trip, was supposed to be picked up by Mason for a date in the early stages of their courtship.” In an interview for Taste Of Country, Lefty says, “This is the thing. Boston … I was sitting at a Boston piano when I wrote this song, but I didn’t know that the piano said Boston until like a month later, so it was like a weird thing, like, ‘I don’t know where this song came from.'”
The lyrics of “Boston” are about longing and uncertainty in the beginning stages of a relationship. The opening lyrics: “On a train back to Boston and we’re jumpin’ the gun/And I’m tellin’ you baby, “This the part wherе I’d run”/But I like it when you’re nicе, like it when you’re nice to me,” present this uncertainty. The lyrics start with this anxiety of the new relationship progressing and wanting to run away from how you feel. But ultimately, Lefty finds this relationship worth confronting those feelings.
Lefty began her fame on TikTok, circumventing the traditional means of rising to stardom. She told Rolling Stone: “It’s just a melting pot of anything and everyone. It’s just crazy. You don’t need any of the things you used to need. It’s a totally different world.” Now she’s touring with big names and her EP Is This Heaven? is soon to release. Lefty just goes to show that you can always find an audience.
