MuseScore Studio 4.6 is here, packed with updates that make writing, playing, and sharing music even more intuitive. From playback upgrades to professional engraving tools, this release helps musicians create with more control and realism.
Layout and Engraving Upgrades for Professional Scores
One of the biggest improvements in MuseScore Studio 4.6 is how scores look and handle on the page.
- Smarter stave management: Hide empty staves globally or individually, with quick visibility controls and detailed rules in the Layout panel.
- Engraving refinements: Place measure numbers below the staff, customize repeat play counts, and control system markings more precisely.
- Font flexibility: Use any SMuFL-compliant music font installed on your computer, along with expanded text font options.
These tools give scores the same polish found in published editions.
More Realistic Playback and Performance Features
Playback in MuseScore Studio 4.6 has been redesigned for a more natural playing experience.
- Direct MIDI input: Perform directly into the app with expressive control over dynamics, note length, and sustain pedal. Works with MuseSounds and supported VST instruments.
- Count-in option: Start playback with a count-in for tighter performances.
- MuseSounds expansions: New Euphonium and Handbell libraries add depth and realism to brass and ensemble scores.
- Guitar tools: Add hammer-ons, pull-offs, and tapping symbols, with playback for these techniques in MuseSounds Guitars Volume 2.
Together, these updates bring a stronger connection between notation and performance.
Piano, Vocal, and Guitar Features Developed with Hal Leonard
The MuseScore Studio team worked with Hal Leonard, the world’s largest publisher of piano, vocal, and guitar scores, to expand PVG support in MuseScore Studio.
- Fretboard diagrams now autofill from chord symbols, with full customization.
- Create fretboard diagram legends with just a few clicks.
- Chord symbols have better scaling, positioning, and alignment, with new support for poly chords.
These changes make MuseScore Studio a stronger tool for both arranging and publishing guitar- and piano-based scores.
Workflow and Accessibility Improvements
Day-to-day use is faster and more flexible in MuseScore Studio 4.6.
- The selection filter can isolate individual notes in chords for quick edits.
- Copy and paste improvements preserve metrical position and make rearranging easier.
- Text editing has a new widget with styling tools and special characters at your fingertips.
- Percussion writers can fit more drum pads on screen by adjusting the percussion panel layout.
- Accessibility updates improve screen reader support and add shortcuts for stopping playback and selecting notes.
These refinements help musicians spend less time on formatting and more time on creativity.
