You are training relative pitch, not perfect pitch

A common worry is that ear training needs perfect pitch — the rare ability to name a note with no reference. It does not. This trains relative pitch: hearing the relationship between notes rather than their absolute value. Relative pitch is what almost all working musicians actually use, and unlike perfect pitch it can be developed by anyone with practice. That is why the trainer plays intervals from different starting notes — you are learning a sound-shape, not a fixed pair of pitches.

What an interval is

An interval is the gap between two notes, named by its size and quality — a major third, a perfect fifth, an octave. The crucial point for ear training is that the same interval sounds the same wherever it starts: a perfect fifth up from C sounds like the same leap as a perfect fifth up from G. The song-anchor method

  • Major third — the first two notes of “When the Saints Go Marching In”.

Ascending, descending, and harmonic

An interval played low-to-high sounds different to the ear than the same interval played high-to-low, and different again when both notes sound together. It is worth practising all three, because a descending fifth will not trigger the same song anchor as an ascending one. Start with ascending intervals, since most anchors are ascending tunes, then work on descending ones separately once the ascending version is secure.

Consonance and dissonance as a clue

Before you name an interval exactly, its general character narrows the field. The octave and perfect fifth sound open and hollow; thirds and sixths sound sweet and full; seconds and sevenths sound sharp and clashing; and the tritone sounds distinctly restless. Sorting a mystery interval into “smooth” or “tense” first, then choosing within that group, is more reliable than trying to name it from nothing — the same listen-for-the-colour approach that works for chords.

Interval inversions

Intervals come in related pairs. Turn a perfect fifth upside down — move the lower note up an octave — and it becomes a perfect fourth; a major third becomes a minor sixth. Recognising these relationships is quicker than treating all twelve intervals as unrelated sounds to memorise separately.

Start with intervals inside a single octave, but be aware that music leaps further than that. A distance larger than an octave — a ninth, a tenth — is a compound interval, and by ear it behaves much like the smaller interval an octave down: a ninth resembles a second, an eleventh a fourth. Once the intervals within an octave are secure, recognising the wider leaps is mostly a matter of subtracting the octave and naming what is left.
