Every note name repeats up and down the keyboard: there’s a C in each octave, then a D, and so on. Pick a note and this tool lights up every key with that name, so you can see the pattern instead of counting up from the left each time.

Why the names repeat
The twelve keys in an octave — seven white, five black — repeat at every octave, so the layout you learn once works everywhere on the piano. The white keys are the plain letters A to G; the black keys are the sharps and flats between them.
How to find a note fast
Use the black-key groups as landmarks. C is the white key just to the left of each group of two black keys; F is the white key just to the left of each group of three. From those two anchors you can name any nearby key without counting from the end.
Every note in Western music has a letter name, and those names follow one short alphabet that repeats up and down the keyboard. The musical alphabet
Music uses just seven letter names — A, B, C, D, E, F, G — and then starts over. After G comes A again, one octave higher. Those seven names cover the white keys of the piano, and the black keys are named in relation to them, so the whole system rests on knowing where the seven letters fall. That is fewer names than most people expect, which is good news: the keyboard only looks complicated because the small pattern repeats so many times.
How the names sit on the keyboard
The keys are laid out in a repeating block of twelve — seven white, five black — and the black keys cluster in groups of two and three. Those groups are the landmarks that let you name any key at a glance. C is the white key just to the left of each group of two black keys, and F is the white key just to the left of each group of three. Fix those two anchors and every other white key is a short count away, because the letters always run in order.
Finding middle C
Middle C is simply the C nearest the centre of a full keyboard, and it is the note most sheet music is written around — it sits just below the treble staff and just above the bass staff, linking the two. To find it, look for the group of two black keys closest to the middle and take the white key on their left. It is worth being able to find middle C instantly, because so many instructions and pieces use it as their reference point.
Octaves: why the names repeat
The distance from one note to the next note of the same name — say one C up to the next C — is an octave. The two notes sound alike, one clearly higher, because the higher one vibrates at exactly twice the frequency of the lower. That physical relationship is why they share a name and why the whole pattern repeats: every octave is the same twelve keys again. To tell them apart, each octave gets a number, so the C in the middle of the keyboard is called C4. Pick a note here and every key with that name lights up, which makes the repeating pattern easy to see all at once.
The black keys: sharps and flats
The five black keys take their names from the white keys on either side. The black key between C and D is C sharp, a half step above C, or D flat, a half step below D — one key with two names. They sound identical; which name is correct depends on the key you are playing in, a choice called enharmonic spelling. This is why the finder offers a flats toggle: the same key can read as C sharp or D flat, and you switch to match how a given piece is written. A “natural” note is simply a plain white-key letter, neither sharpened nor flattened.
The same note on the staff
On the page, a note’s pitch is shown by how high or low it sits on the staff, and each line and space corresponds to one of these keyboard notes. The treble staff carries the higher notes, roughly from middle C upward; the bass staff carries the lower ones. Connecting a written note to its key is the core reading skill, and the note reading trainer drills exactly that — a note appears on the staff and you find it on the keyboard. Seeing where a name lives here first makes that jump much easier.
Clefs and the grand staff
A single staff of five lines cannot cover the whole keyboard, so music uses two, marked by different clefs. The treble clef sits on the upper staff and carries the higher notes, the ones a right hand usually plays; the bass clef sits on the lower staff for the deeper notes of the left hand. Stacked together with middle C between them, they form the grand staff that piano music is written on. Middle C is the hinge: it sits on a short line just below the treble staff and just above the bass staff, which is why it is such a useful note to be able to find instantly.
Ledger lines: notes beyond the staff
When a note is too high or too low for its five lines, it is written on short extra lines called ledger lines, added just for that note. Middle C on the treble staff is the most common example, sitting on a single ledger line below. The further a note strays onto ledger lines, the harder it is to read quickly, which is why players learn the notes on and around the staff as landmarks and count from there.
Accidentals and key signatures
A sharp, flat, or natural sign written in front of a note is called an accidental, and it raises or lowers that note for the rest of the bar. Rather than mark the same sharps or flats over and over, music collects the ones a key always uses into a key signature at the start of each line, so a piece in G major simply writes one sharp there and every F becomes F sharp automatically. A natural sign cancels that for a single note. This is the notation side of the same sharps and flats you see on the black keys here.
All twelve notes: the chromatic scale
Counting the white and black keys together, there are twelve different notes in an octave before the names begin again. Playing all twelve in order, each a half step apart, gives the chromatic scale. Seven of the twelve are the plain letter names on the white keys; the other five are the sharps and flats on the black keys. Everything in music — every scale, chord, and key — is a selection from these twelve, which is why learning to name all of them on the keyboard pays off everywhere else.
Concert pitch: what fixes a note
A note name tells you which key to play, but a standard is needed to fix how high that note actually sounds. That standard is concert pitch, set so that the A above middle C — A4 — vibrates at 440 hertz. Every other note follows from it, doubling in frequency each octave. This is why an instrument tuned to A440 will play in tune with any other, and why the same written note sounds the same everywhere: the letter name and the octave number together point to one agreed pitch.
Do, re, mi: the other set of names
Alongside the letters, notes are often sung with the solfège syllables do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti. In the most common system these are movable: do is whatever note the key is built on, so the syllables describe a note’s role in the scale rather than its fixed letter. That makes solfège a useful bridge between the fixed letter names you find here and the way a melody actually feels as it rises and falls.
A note name is only its pitch
One thing a note name does not tell you is how long to hold it. Pitch — which key — and duration — how many beats — are separate properties: the same C can be a quick passing note or a long held one. This tool is about pitch, the where of a note; rhythm and note lengths are a separate topic, handled by the beat rather than the keyboard. Keeping the two ideas apart makes both easier to learn.
Why finding notes matters
Note names are the raw material for everything else. A scale is a chosen sequence of them, a chord is a stack of them, and an interval is the distance between two. Once you can find any note, the scale finder and the chord finder show how those notes group into scales and chords, the interval finder measures the gaps between them, and you can play any of them on the virtual piano to hear what you have found.
