This is a short tone poem for string orchestra. The piece evokes the cloudy and drippy nature of a winter walk in the river valleys of the Cascade Mountains.

Polychords and quartal harmony give the music its spicy character.

The old version of the third movement was nice, but I felt it did not fit in stylistically with the other movements. This new one is a lively Scherzo based on lydian scales. I'm still continuing to work on it, so don't bother downloading the score.

The second movement of my Sinfonietta in G - Andante, un poco scherzando. This movement is a lightweight frill that balances the more serious mood of the others.

After a short introduction reminiscent of the first movement, a solo clarinet plays a lively tune. Later, the strings decide they want to play some nice Beethoven, but the woodwinds have their own ideas and they get in a bit of an argument.

Eventually the mood changes, and woodwinds play a minor, melancholy variation of their theme with the cooperation of the string section. After a buildup to a forte with a rather ominous chord, the music settles down and the movement ends in a Beethoven-esque fashion, the strings finally getting their way at last.

Atterberg Symphony #2 in F Movement II (WIP)

Flute(2), Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet(3), Bassoon, French Horn(2), Trumpet, Trombone(2), Timpani, Percussion, Piano, Violin(2), Viola, Cello, Contrabass
Atterberg is at his best in the slow movements of his symphonies. He is an unapologetic composer of neo-Romantic music, slightly spiced with 20th century harmony and rhythmic energy. The movement immediately begins with one of his soaring melodies. After some variations and development of the theme, the movement unexpectedly transitions to a fast, scherzolike Presto. I'll finish this "work in progress" as time allows.

The orchestration is different than in the first movement. He adds an English Horn and Piano to the already big set of instruments.

This early work of Kurt Atterberg makes few concessions to 20th century modernism, although it was composed in 1916. His second symphony is Late Romantic in character, with the lush harmonies and soaring melodies that are typical in his work. The orchestration is also typical of a late romantic work with pairs of woodwinds, piccolo and bass clarinet, 2 trumpets, 4 horns, three trombones and tuba. The small percussion section includes timpani and cymbal, used tastefully for emphasis in just a few places.

Atterberg's most famous work is his 6th symphony which has a jazzy and insouciant quality, although still quite conservative by 20th century standards .

A fugue for classical orchestra. Complete draft version - I'll probably continue to work on it.

After reading through "Gradus Al Parnassum" and its sections on counterpoint and fugue, I decided to write a little fugue myself...probably violating a few rules in the process. Actually most of this piece was constructed using Gradus methods using consonant invervals and triads. What gives this piece a modern sound is the aggressive use of modulation. My composion methods was very Fuxian - I would write a good sounding melody, then use that as a "Cantus Firmus" and add lines atop that. This is Fux...on drugs!
