Few songs have had as much staying power as “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. Released in 2004 on their debut, “Hot Fuss,” the song spent over 400 weeks on the UK Singles Chart and has amassed over 2.8 billion Spotify streams. Although it’s been in constant rotation for over two decades, the song never topped a chart, making it “the biggest song to never hit No. 1.”

“Mr. Brightside” has it all: jealousy, heartbreak, resilience, and an insanely catchy hook. Its blend of indie rock and pop clarity makes it ideal for sing-alongs from clubs to weddings, but there’s something else about the track that hints at nostalgia in a good way.

“It is a completely timeless-sounding song,” says NPR’s Steven Thompson. “A lot of songs that came out around that era, early 2000s, you think about what the pop hits were by groups like the Black Eyed Peas, where there is a little bit of a dated feel to the song. And you hear that, and you think – ugh, God, that’s so 2004. When you hear ‘Mr. Brightside,’ you don’t necessarily think – ugh, that’s so 2004, even if you relate it to your life back then.”

Another part of the magic is that the song’s anthemic quality lends itself to so many different genres and interpretations. “Mr. Brightside” is reinvented nearly every year by an artist who recognizes its power and wants to tap into it.

These six covers reimagine “Mr. Brightside” with fresh instrumentation, acoustic intimacy, and creative crossovers.

Amy Shark Delivers A Faithful Yet Personal Take On ‘Mr. Brightside’

Australian indie-pop singer Amy Shark unleashed the song during a performance at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. As NME explains, “Backing band in tow, Shark’s rendition stays relatively faithful to the original version, the charged instrumental foregrounding her vocals.”

Shark’s vocal approach gives it a personal touch as she bends the melody in some key places.

Acoustic Energy And Fingerstyle Flair From Sinclair

Like many of the biggest rock hits, “Mr. Brightside” transfers perfectly to an acoustic cover. Sinclair proves just that with her take, which begins with some fine fingerstyle picking before switching to strumming. She leans into the stripped-back instrumentation by adjusting the arrangement, giving the chorus a half-time feel and adding rhythmic interest with hits. (Don’t miss the awesome lick at the 1:34 mark!)

Momento Turns ‘Mr. Brightside’ Into A Violin Duo Showpiece

Here’s another version that brings a different approach to the acoustic idea. Momento is a violin duo comprised of Jonathan Chan and Jan Bislin. In this stunning performance for Sofar London, they get more sounds out of their instruments than most do in their entire career. Bislin plucks and furiously strums as Chan bows the melody. After the second chorus, they lower the dynamics to pianissimo before Bislin picks up his bow to create a new texture, closing out the song.

Nicholas Wells Brings A Reflective Edge To ‘Mr. Brightside’

A wall of distorted guitars drives the original Killers version, but Nicholas Wells proves it translates perfectly to the piano. The nature of the instrument allows for playing the arpeggiated parts in the right hand while the left hand brings depth and weight with the chords.

Vintage Swing Vibes From Postmodern Jukebox

Postmodern Jukeboxis a musical project that proves the timelessness of popular songs. They often reinvent modern songs with vintage arrangements. Here, vocalist Blake Lewis fronts the band for a 1940s Rat Pack-style rendition. The easy swing softens the song’s urgency, but it heightens the vibes.

Mac Glocky Channels System Of A Down On ‘Mr. Brightside’

In another mashup, we have this version by Mac Glocky, titled “If System of Down wrote ‘Mr. Brightside.'” He perfectly mimics vocalist Serj Tankian’s signature style, jumping between a frantic flurry of lyrics and screaming. He even opens the chorus up into a more melodic style like some of SOAD’s biggest hits.
