Ella Langley has found yet another song trending with “Weren’t For The Wind.” The song was written by Langley, as well as Johnny Clawson and Joybeth Taylor, while Langley was opening for Jon Pardi during his 2023 tour. It was released in 2024, but has only found itself on the Billboard Hot 100 for the past 24 weeks, with it currently sitting at no. 18. However, it was originally her first no. 1 solo hit on Country Radio, following her 2024 chart-topping duet with Riley Green, “You Look Like You Love Me.” Backstage Country says, “The milestone marks Langley’s second consecutive single to top the Mediabase chart, placing her among a short list of female country artists with back-to-back No. 1s. The track is featured on her 18-song project Still Hungover, which showcases her blend of traditional country and gritty storytelling.” To which Langley reacted on Instagram with, “Weren’t for the wind is #1 on country radio baby!!!!! So proud of this song, everything that it’s done and continues to do. Thank y’all for loving this song.”
Langley got the inspiration for the song when driving through Wyoming, saying, “I don’t know if you’ve ever been through Wyoming, but it’s just, it’s all this beautiful land. It’s just flat. There’s horses everywhere. I just vividly, like every time I drive through Wyoming, there’s always one moment where there’s this horse running alongside of whatever I’m in. I’m like, love that. So I feel like it’s just these western-y type vibes. And I don’t know, that one just kind of fell out. I can’t even remember who brought in that title. I don’t even think we had a title for it. The song just fell out that way.”
The chord progression follows vi–iii–I–V in A major. Since the song avoids beginning on the I chord, it creates a feeling of instability or flowing through the wind. The chorus retains the chord progression except for the vi, which becomes IV, which gives the chorus some uniqueness while keeping the flowing feel.
In the same Country Now article, Langley states, “My goal as a songwriter, as an artist, is to put out the best songs I could possibly put out and then kind of let the fans take it from there. And I love them all. So whatever one goes, I guess I’m happy with. But this one really struck a chord with people, and I don’t know if it’s the melody or the words or whatever the heck it may be, but hopefully it just keeps going.”
